Summary
“You did good.”
“For an amateur, you mean?”
Parker glanced over at him. Grofield did look like an actor, a good profile with a strong nose, his hair all wavy and blonde and carefully tended so it would curl just so. Parker could see him on a cigarette card like they had when he was a kid.
“You won’t always be an amateur,” he said.

Summary
When Grofield ran up to him at the airport, he stopped just short of a hug. Parker stood there and took him in, the din of the crowd around them. It wasn’t so bad on a weekday morning, but airports always had a busy sense of coming and going about them.
“Parker,” Grofield said. His eyes were bright. He said it like it contained all he had to say.

Summary
They were partners-in-crime and that’s all they’d ever been but laying wounded in a hotel room in Mexico, part-time actor part-time thief Grofield finds out he needs cold-blooded pro Parker more than he’d ever imagined.

Summary
It was opening night jitters. Parker knew what that meant, like when people got the flutters right before a job – it happened to good dependable people, it could happen to anybody. That was what Parker was here for, and he thought he’d see the season through. Grofield wouldn’t ask for it, and he wouldn’t offer. It would just happen.
“It’ll look good,” Parker said, “when you’ve got the actors on there, it’ll look good.”
He put a hand on Grofield’s shoulder. He’d stayed because he’d wanted to, was the truth. His wants used to be simple.

Summary
He’d brought Grofield in on this one though, so he was responsible for him. Parker had spent the better part of this last year in Mead Grove and money was running out, it was the main reason he’d walked into a job that was no good and he’d told himself he could make it into something workable twice now.

Summary
“You didn’t have to do that,” Buck says when they’re halfway across Arizona.
He’s been staring out the passenger window for almost an hour, forehead resting against the hot, dusty glass. Eddie glances over at him, then down at the gauges on the dashboard to make sure the piece of shit car’s not going to blow up, then back at the road.
Tight grip on the steering wheel, just in case.
“Do what?”
Buck picks up his head and adjusts himself in his seat with a grunt. Eddie listens to him take a steadying breath, another while he works through the pain.
“In the bar,” he says. “The other night. Those guys.”

Summary
“And then he basically accused me of being in love with you, which was so ridiculous that I kicked him out,” Buck finally says, out of breath and flushed with terror. “Which was the right move, because that was crazy, right? Doesn’t that sound crazy?”
“What? Why?” Eddie asks over speakerphone, sounding not even a little horrified by the suggestion and in fact, more distracted than anything. “Wait, sorry, give me one second, I need to watch the recipe video.

Summary
Eddie listens to the voicemail later. Buck sounds like he’s at a grocery store, absentmindedly talking into the phone. “Oh, I guess you’re with your sisters. Sorry to miss you. I just wanted to tell you about this call we had last night, but I gotta hear your reactions, so, later. Okay, uh, I guess I’ll just call back. Or text.”
It ends abruptly, without a goodbye. Eddie replays it a second time, closes his eyes as he sits in the truck. For a moment, he can pretend Buck is sitting in the passenger seat next to him. For a moment, Eddie is back in Los Angeles and his best friend is dragging him through the grocery store.
The voicemail ends, Eddie opens his eyes, and the fantasy breaks. Eddie is still in El Paso, parked in front of the house he’s renting, and there’s no one in the passenger seat with him.
Eddie moves to Texas. Buck moves into his house. There's a love story somewhere in here.

Summary
It’s not like Buck needs anyone to tell him what his issues are. They might as well be written on his forehead in bright red marker. He’s not ignoring it or anything; Buck just doesn’t see the point in re-litigating them every time he feels like this, every time he feels like a dog that got sent back to the pound. It’s not like he doesn’t have his friends and family, and Tommy is sleeping right next to him, but there’s a hole in Buck’s chest he’s had since he was born and he still doesn’t know how to fill it.
When the 118 is closed for reconstruction after an earthquake, Buck is a floater for different stations around the city. He tries not to let it get to him. Much.
