Summary
Rust — Rust a fool — allows himself to imagine a world in which he turns. A world in which they solve this together, they grind it out and start thinking, really thinking, pavements and hard man-hours, answer to nobody but themselves, they solve it. Marty turns. Let this be that world — it’s the world of shit-all else, it’s the world where Rust wakes up wishing he hadn’t every fucking morning, the world in which he knows the sound a child’s bones, still soft, make under the wheels of an ‘84 Mercedes 230CE — let him have this, just this. Only this.
Marty doesn’t turn. Marty mutters under his breath, “Sanctimonious prick,” and Marty leaves.
They arrest Rust twenty-one days later.

Summary
“Jesus.” Rust turns his head against the concrete. Under the car, between the wheels, he sees the dead mechanic’s blood spreading in a neat pool from his shattered skull. “Don’t tell me you get off on this shit.”
Marty breathes out. He doesn’t let go of Rust, doesn’t move. He says, “It’s complicated.”

Summary
Some little scene sketches from early in Marty and Rust's partnership, and parts of the 1995 investigation. Not in chronological order.
In Louisiana Rust creates his own structure. His work is necessary and not overtly cruel to the larger human organism of which he is a part. He is entitled to the things that allow him to do the work: mattress, cigarettes, books, shoes.
He is not entitled to Marty but has ended up with him anyway. This will backfire.

Summary
In the glow of the lighter, watching it dissolve in the pit of the spoon, Rust’s profile is put together like something handsome drawn only from memory, the connective tissue slightly off, lines configuring without anything soft or warm in it. Marty wants to touch that cheekbone. Hit it, maybe. Find out if it’s really as unyielding as it looks.
— the night after Ledoux, Marty and Rust each seek out a different sort of release.
