The silence that followed was brief, but thick, heavy with disbelief. Only the distant murmur of traffic from the window could be heard. Sophia blinked, slowly and deliberately.
"...What did you just say?" she asked, as if her brain refused to process the words.

The silence that fell upon the room was so dense and heavy that Daniela could hear the buzz of blood in her ears. Her mind, her practical and logical mind, refused to process the word. "Vampire." It was a joke. A joke in bad taste, elaborate and expensive.
