Summary
Years before the tragedy in Ashford Meadow, dreadful dreams had always come to Daeron even as a child. Deaths and horrors and the grief it brought had been a constant companion to the prince. Pulsing through his blood like a curse, along with it, the complexity of the waking world through his identity as the prince of the realm and his father's son.
Before the wine and the whores, he found an unlikely friendship with one strange girl, who seemed to share the similarly grim prospect of a sound sleep as himself. Though Romme's dreams were less of a harbinger of tragedy, than it were a reminder of the cruelty of battles and deaths by the recent Blackfyre rebellion that marred the realm. Through quiet stolen moments, they found solace in each other, sharing drinks and comfort all night to escape their own ghosts. A friendship, something which mayhaps would be enough for them to endure it all, even for just a little while.

"All these years," Romme asked. Her finger gently tucked strands of hair behind his ear. "Do you ever dream of me?"
Daeron let out a bitter smile. "That's the last place where I wish to meet you."

Summary
“Perhaps the seeds of madness are sown in the womb.”
Not for Aerion, no. Nor for Egg. But Daeron had always known. Since he was small, he saw the tapestries upon the walls burn above his cradle, and he knew. Drink or delirium, it did not matter. One way or another, his visions would be the death of him.
He had not reckoned he would have to suffer more than one.
The gods want something from Daeron. They must, to have devised so exceptional a hell. For why else would they have him live these days over and over?
If they have chosen Daeron to change the future, they have chosen the wrong man. Daeron is not a hero. He never has been.
