Ellie arrives home to find the farmhouse empty and battles with the emotions this evokes.
"The chestnut-haired girl made her way through the empty shell of a house to leave. A sickening pain ripped through her gut when the dizzying realization of what she had lost sank in. She dropped to her knees in the kitchen and let out a visceral cry of anguish, hands clenched to form fists, eyes scrunched up, willing the memory away. Tears formed at the corners of Ellie’s eyes. Deep, heaving breaths turned into grief-stricken sobs."
Meanwhile, Dina tries to live a normal life back in Jackson, but can't forget about her life with Ellie.
"She had never seen Ellie look so frail; the remaining fingers on her hand had virtually become skin and bone, and she remembered back to holding it; how fragile it felt, fingernails caked with dry blood. She couldn’t begin to imagine what Ellie had suffered over the previous months."
