Aventurine is so distracted that he does not notice the car door opening at the back until someone heaves a loud sigh. His heart nearly jumps out from the shock. Is he being mugged in this day and age? He could already imagine the headlines in the news the next morning: The senior manager of the of the Strategic Department of IPC, mugged in front of the university of Veritas Prime?

"Good evening...?" He tries to be civil. Perhaps the intruder will be amazed by his impeccable manners and dashing looks to forgo doing heinous crimes against him. Technically, if worst comes to worst, he's got plenty of credits to spare, but he would rather not lose spare change for no reason when he can keep it for another day.

    ---

Or: Ratio mistakes Aventurine's car as his Uber ride. They deal with the drama (read: stupid rom-com) that ensues. (Oh, the tragedy)

Aventurine awakens with a jerk of his reconstructed jaw. Gold-brown metal gleams where synthetic skin once stretched. His lips twitch experimentally and his eyes are still so, damningly red but they refocus on Ratio and Aventurine's back online again.

Ratio knows Aventurine won't like this—knows it in the marrow of his weary bones—but still, the apology stumbles from his lips like a child unsure of its first steps. “I’m sorry,” he murmurs, and in this moment, Ratio feels the true beginning of the end.

Aventurine simply tilts his head with the inevitability of a conclusion. His voice, when it comes, is calm, devoid of accusation. “Sunday won’t let me stay, will he?”

    It isn’t a question.

    Or:

Ratio rebuilds Aventurine again. And again. And again.

“Listen Akira, I’m different from your little friends, I don’t—!” Goro froze mid-sentence, biting his lip hard as if the rest of his thought might betray him.

And in that moment, everything clicked into place, piece by jagged piece. Of course. Goro wasn’t a straight path; he was a maze, with walls that twisted and turned, guarding the core of what truly mattered.

Swallowing against the tightness in his chest, Akira leaned in, his voice barely more than a whisper.

“Wait. Don’t tell me… do you really think you don’t deserve it?”

A birthday party for Akechi goes wrong. Instead of proceeding as planned, Akira takes a minor, rougher detour.

Not a single thing is out of place, but Veritas still walks towards the statue and stares up at its sightless eyes. He turns to follow its gaze and hears the softest rasp of stone on stone, only to whip his head back and find the statue as he’d left it — still unmoving, still sightless, still with an enigmatic half-smile on its perfectly-chiselled lips.

“You are nothing but a statue. Not once have you displayed any propensity for animation or sentience. Logically speaking, your head is as empty as the imbeciles I have the displeasure of educating.”

The statue, rather unsurprisingly, makes no attempt to respond.

There is nothing concrete to support his harebrained hypothesis, no empirical evidence to forge any correlation between the statue’s arrival and Veritas’ benign nuisance. There is only unsubstantiated intuition — the instincts of a man barely above the fools he condemns, bristling with qualifications that can do nothing to prove his suspicions.

Veritas looked more like an angel than that Halovian ever had, more like a god than any Aventurine had ever seen depicted. His presence was more magnetic than the voice of the Harmony had been, even from within his own mind. He was more powerful, more commanding, more terrifying. He had heard many stories of mortals who wished to become Aeons. He wondered why they searched so hard for answers to a problem that had already been solved—it had been done, he thought; Veritas had done it.

    Or

Aventurine has a teeny tiny little breakdown in which he spirals while thinking about Ratio as a god and himself as a sacrifice of sorts

Their viridian green eyes peer into his arms with pointed interest. He’d forgotten he was holding the scroll at all, so he unleashed the death grip he had on it, unrolling a corner to check the contents.

“I got a gift.” He responds, with the tone of someone who received a dead rat in a shoebox.

“A new job?” Twenty-Two looks over their shoulder, lifting themselves on their tiptoes.

“I’m going to sculpt somebody from the Genius Society,” Thirty-Five says, unveiling the rest of the scroll to the twins who are perched each on a shoulder, “Someone called Doctor Ratio.”

Number Thirty-Five lives the life of a slave - full of uncertainty and abuse wherever he turns. That is until he is moved by the unfathomable curiosity of a foreign Doctor. To be given a new name is to be given new life, to give one's heart away is to forfeit one's own possession of the self.
That goes against the rules of Aventurine's Master.

So, how long will it take for this beautiful fantasy to fall apart around them?

As the brightest mind of the Intelligentsia Guild, Ratio is asked to assist with the investigation. It’s a high-stakes case and the departments are competing to present their version of events to the Board of Directors. Buried beneath the political feud, the growing body count, and the scars of an intricate scheme, Ratio must find the truth.

But can he do that, when the person who was closest to the blast, the person who is now missing, and might be missing forever… was also the one and only person he could rely on in his weakest moments?

Without Aventurine… can he even stay sane…?

The gambler sighs. “Well, you’ll get it out of me one way or another, won’t you?”

Ratio frowns. “I would not force you to speak on such things if you were unwilling,” he tells him. “I did not intend to come across that way. I am just…” It’s now his turn to look away as he attempts to collect his thoughts.

Aventurine raises an eyebrow questioningly, but doesn’t say anything - just waits for the doctor to continue.

Ratio takes a deep breath, then sighs, bringing his gaze back to meet the gambler’s intent eyes once more. “I am worried for you, Aventurine. This is not the first time you have come home with unexplained injuries, and I… well, you can come to me if you ever need assistance. You understand that, correct?”

Veritas strained to catch a glimpse of his mysterious visitor in the dark of his room, but as before, his eyes revealed nothing. His outstretched hands met solid flesh that he couldn’t see, and as with the two times prior, it set his heart to frantically thundering against his ribs.

“Who are you,” he whispered, intent. His words felt small in the quiet. “I just want to know your name.”

Dr. Veritas Ratio discovers that the incubus who has boldly taken the liberty of visiting him several nights in one week is, in fact, a strangely ideal bed partner.

Or would be, if he could only see or hear it...

“My trial will be held soon,” Aventurine says, ignoring the rapid thrumming in his chest. “To determine my punishment for breaking the cornerstone during my mission. It is decided that all the Stonehearts will take a vote to decide whether or not my own position as a Stoneheart will be taken away.”

Veritas’ expression doesn’t change as he takes in Aventurine’s words.

“They will take a vote on your… resignation?”

Aventurine averts his gaze to look at the floor. He doesn’t dare to stare into his partner’s concerned eyes when he utters the next words.

Aventurine is stuck in a time loop on the day of his “death.”

After forty cycles of failed attempts to get time moving forward, he decides to take a break from solving the mystery and blow off a little steam with Ratio. But the doctor’s reaction to what Aventurine intends to be a casual hook-up raises deep issues for both of them and ends up dragging Ratio into the time loop.

To break free, they will have to cooperate. Productive communication, however, turns out to be a much bigger challenge than the time loop itself.

Pt. 2 of The Unveiling of a Dying Star

Ratio stopped in the hallway, far down it, as if tucking himself away from the people who bled out from the ballroom. His back faced Aventurine, dimly lit by the lights, and Aventurine briefly had to wonder if this was a nightmare. If he approached Ratio now, would he attack him? Try to hurt him like he had in previous dreams? Or would he do it on his own volition?
The doctor dipped his head back, sipping directly from a bottle of something, and when he turned, shooting Aventurine a glance, the gambler realized a couple of things:
Ratio was drinking his favorite drink. His hair had gotten longer. There were bags under his eyes and hair fallen over his face that he made no effort to fix.
Aventurine stepped closer to him, appropriate.. Conversation length, and instead of smelling of human being – attractive, masculine, yet equally domestic smelling of cashmere and cotton.. He smelt of booze.
Holy fuck, said his worry-brain. I broke the guy.

Their formula was quick and rough. They weren’t kind to each other. They weren’t gentle. Aventurine liked it that way. He was content with it, he was, but now Ratio is soft with him, and Aventurine likes that so much more. It’s terrifying.

“Ah,” Aventurine said, rubbing his arm, “so that’s why they had us refresh all our vaccinations before this trip. We’re not in any danger of falling ill, are we? I’d hate to ruin such a nice vacation.”

“It’s unclear,” Ratio said. Aventurine side-eyed him, looking less relaxed now. But if those folktales had any merit to them at all, “more likely, no.”

They were approaching the town now, inclined turquoise shingles peeking out over the edges of the treeline. It seemed like every building here was overgrown with flowers—flowers burst from the vines on white stucco walls, bouquets hung from the bucket-laden stalls at every corner, and almost all the windows were decorated with boxes abundant with blooms.

“It’s beautiful, but,” he grimaced, voicing Ratio’s thoughts aloud, “a little morbid, isn’t it?”

To a scientist, mythology and fairy tales are simply veneers that warp and obscure the truth. And to a doctor, diseases are problems that can be solved with logic rather than love.

“...Ratio,” Aventurine said slowly, “is it okay that everyone knows?”

There was only one thing that Aventurine could possibly refer to. The papers Ratio held wrinkled in his hands.

Was Aventurine uncomfortable with other people knowing about their relationship? If that were true, then it would admittedly sting a little, but it wasn’t something to cause a huge fuss over. Logically speaking, he could admit that there were some advantages to hiding their relationship, but all the reasons in the world would not abate the bitterness in his heart.

“I was under the impression that our relationship was never a secret in the first place,” Ratio stated. “If you believe otherwise, you have not expressed it to me.”

“I don’t mind it. I like it, actually. I mean, who wouldn’t want to brag that their boyfriend is the great Veritas Ratio?” Aventurine declared. He tried his best, but the cheer in his voice didn’t quite ring true. Ratio’s heartbeat pounded in his ears. He waited for the other shoe to drop. “It’s just… are we dating?”

In which Ratio and Aventurine are dating but one of them isn’t aware.
