Summary
Years ago, Kaveh tore their joint research paper conclusion page in half, walked out of the office, and told Alhaitham to live his life his way.
Alhaitham listened—on the surface.
Underneath, he kept the torn pages in a drawer and spent the next few years watching from the margins: sitting in the back row of Kaveh’s lectures, nudging audits in the Bazaar, turning monsters away from a desert camp, rearranging variables so the world would hurt him a little less.
When rain and debt and bad timing finally push them back under the same roof, Kaveh discovers what’s been living between the lines of Alhaitham’s life this whole time: a vow he never said out loud, and doesn’t quite know how to return.
Or, Alhaitham spends years yearning for and protecting Kaveh in ways Kaveh was never meant to notice.

An odd research submission begins paving the way to a dangerous inclination bordering on obsession. In a wholly illogical sense, the lingering obsession focuses on his roommate.
A visceral string of events begins, with a temple devoted to the deceased Goddess of Flowers being the epicenter.

Kaveh and Alhaitham watch the ball drop in Times Square on New Year's Eve.
“You put on that extra shirt, right?” Alhaitham asked skeptically.
Kaveh blinked. “The what?”
That was answer enough. Closing his eyes with a heavy sigh, Alhaitham pinched the bridge of his nose. “The thermal layer. The one I reminded you about three times before we left.”
“Oh,” Kaveh said with a slight, unrepentant smile. “Right. That.”
“You drive me insane.”
“It’s fine,” Kaveh insisted, though his teeth clicked together on the last syllable, betraying the extent to which the chill was getting to him. “It’s just a little cold.”
“It’s barely five degrees,” Alhaitham said flatly. “And you’re somehow constitutionally incapable of regulating your own body temperature.”

Summary
In thirty minutes, Alhaitham is going to be home, and Kaveh needs to be able to be his most composed self for the inevitable confrontation that will happen the second his roommate is through the door.
Actually— no, scratch that.
Why live through the confrontation at all when he could move out right the fuck now? If he starts packing this very second he can at least take a bag for some of his clothes and another for his most important tools. Right? Right.
Kaveh accidentally ends a phone call with “I love you.” Alhaitham… deals with it.
