Summary
The hand he took that night was small, but so very warm. And the hug he was given in the carriage was reminiscent of how his sister would comfort him when the night was too dark. The child spoke of many promises to train him, to become his mentor, and to make him invincible. Stronger he will be, and he will find all of those who had dared take away everything he had ever known. Anger was an emotion that used to be foreign in his heart, but now it wraps around him like chains, digging into his skin and branding him so he may never forget his reason for existence.
He survived. Therefore, he must pay for it with his life.

"You're shaking…" Mydei pointed out and upon hearing him, Phainon began to notice he was right. He took his hands away from resting against Mydei's torso and immediately felt how unsteady they were, the vibrations running up his arms. "Was it another nightmare?" his lover asked.
"Yeah…" Phainon whispered but a part of him was unsure whether it was right to call it that. The truth was, it was more accurate to call it a memory from his time marching through the cycles.
The Flamechase is over, Irontomb is defeated and the cycles have ceased, yet Phainon is still haunted by his time trapped within the misery of the reoccurrences. Nightmares strike in the dead of night but comfort lies in the embrace waiting for him when he wakes; no matter the horrors, the dawn will always come and Mydei will always be there with it.

At some point all Phainon was able to think about was Mydei's mouth, wet with blood, imagining the drag of it down Phainon's jugular, the heat of it against Phainon's lips—a sure sign of abundant blunt force trauma to the brain. Mydei spat in his eye, Phainon elbowed Mydei's windpipe, and so on and so forth. Then Phainon opened his mouth and said: "I bet you won't win against me this round," which Mydei replied: "With what?" and Phainon joked: "My dignity." Mydei's laugh was rough, feral. He said: "Deal."
