"You're quiet," Madeleine says casually the next morning, and Claudia can't tell if it's too casual, a practiced calm against fear of the familiar storm, or merely an observation.

Or, after Madeleine has been made into a vampire, Claudia has a few questions about the memories she saw in her mind, frightened that things have not changed all that much since New Orleans. Madeleine reassures her the only way she knows how.

I go away, he’d said with his back and thighs covered in criss-crossing wounds from the whip, blood streaming down all of the slopes of his body in little lazy rivers, otherwise. Sometimes.

And what could Daniel have said to that? The solution is simple. The doctor prescribes a daily dose of vivisection. The doctor prescribes the kind of hurt you’ve never even imagined before. Open up your ribcage and stick your hand inside. No need to glove up. The infection has already taken everything worth taking. Better add more where things have been taken away. Finger after finger. Three, and then four. Press down and the air escapes. Let go and it returns.

Daniel swallowed his own saliva as he heard the metallic clatter of a platter and surgical instruments, and then the familiar sound of a cassette tape being placed inside a recorder, followed by a button being pressed. Hitting record.

Armand’s voice was loud and clear, with airs of professional impersonality. “Deceased’s name is Daniel Molloy. Male, Born October 10th, 1953. Height, 6 feet. Weight, 168 lbs. Race, Caucasian. Hair color, brown. Reported cause of death… Drug overdose.”

Or: soft, vulnerable things are made to be taken apart. In Armand's eyes, Daniel is soft, and too vulnerable.

    Summary

Armand has known the simplicity of indifference— of staring blank eyed at catacomb walls, of no longer having the will to care about what was done to bring him underground, of monotone responses as he listens to the screaming that waxes and wanes in the dying embers of a fire— and he has known it well. He has known it better than he has known most things.

Or, in hating Lestat, Armand finds himself feeling alive for the first time in centuries.
