“You’re right, I need to win,” Sonic stated cheekily, flashing Shadow a smile, trying to push Shadow’s arms in opposite directions but Shadow didn’t allow him.
“No, you don’t, Sonic,” Shadow replied, “You need the chase. You need the escape.”
“Stop talking,” Sonic mumbled, fighting against Shadow harder, only making Shadow struggle more against him.
“The race isn’t the escape, Sonic, I am.”

Summary
Merlin knew his go-to excuse of “going to the tavern” to explain his disappearances was always going to bite him in the arse. He just didn’t expect that one night while he was off doing magical things that said tavern would burn to the ground in a devastating fire and he would be presumed one of the victims.
