Jane clears her throat as Guildford suddenly comes to a stop, fiddling with a key before unlocking what must be a heavy wooden door. “When will I be allowed to see you, my lord?”
Guildford stiffens, and she can feel the taut muscles beneath his tunic. “Not for a year and a day, I’m afraid. The Dudley family is very superstitious.”
Jane makes a face, then realises that Guildford can’t see her making said face.

Summary
Modern AU - Jane is an overworked medical student at Cambridge who is in dire need of a date to her sister's engagement - all in order to keep Lady Frances from setting her up. She decides to bring the worst guy she can find and make her mother regret her meddling. Guildford is playing in a rock band at the local pub, and Jane of course picks the man she was always going to.
Really just an excuse to give Guildford a little earring.

“I’m sorry,” he said eventually, his jawline tense and sharp as glass. “For what happened earlier this evening. It wasn’t fair of me to take advantage of you like that. I apologise.”
Jane wanted to throw something at him. He knew damn well that she was the one who should be apologising, and here he was, trying to steal the high ground from her. She wasn’t about to let him make out like she was some simpering idiot, unable to control her lust, her infatuation. She was in control. She had to be.
Otherwise this entire deal could blow up in her face and she might be saddled (hah!) with him forever.
“You can’t apologise,” she said swiftly, lifting her chin in challenge.
“And why not?” he asked, hands on hips.
“Because I was the one taking advantage of you.”
...
or, Jane's body is reacting to Guildford in ways she didn't think it was capable of. She doesn't want to ask Guildford for help, but if her research fails her, she might not have any other options.
