Summary
A late-night drop by a panicked thief leaves a broken jar of luxury face powder melting in the mud outside Maomao’s shop. Out of pure curiosity, she tests it—only to find the high-grade imperial cosmetic has been laced with a slow-acting poison meant to quietly wipe out the court.
When she goes outside to find whatever guards lost their shipment, she runs into a tall, undercover soldier with a ridiculous face and a thoroughly annoying attitude.
A gritty, street-level rewrite of the Rear Palace arc. No nobility titles to hide behind, just an investigator who needs an expert he can actually trust, and an apothecary who just wants to be left alone with her father and shop.
