The guy’s eyes flicked up to meet his — quick, shy, but direct enough to hit Mike like a punch to the chest. His hands automatically grabbed a mug and a cloth to wipe it with, but he didn’t look away, smiling and tilting his head to the side.
And before he could stop himself, Mike said it:
“You know, if you keep looking at me like that, I’m gonna forget how to order.”
The guy — Will — blinked, startled. Then his cheeks flushed a warm pink, and he ducked his head for half a second before looking back up with a tiny, braver smile. He glanced around, then back at Mike.

"—Can you marry my brother?" A puppyish girl with twin, low, golden-blonde pigtails and denim overalls asks, abrupt and innocent. She's braiding a plastic, pink clip of fake hair she'd put on him. "He really, really, really likes boy bunnies. He has a magazine full of them under his bed, but he's glued the pages shut. He doesn't like to talk about it, though. Tsk, tsk."
Will's mouth falls open in a quiet, full belly-laugh, completely taken aback by her sincerity and youth-bred oblivion. He's well aware of how direct kids can be—he'd taken care of them at an after-school program all throughout middle-school at a place right near his mom's old job in Lenora,but that's besides the point. No one that young has ever been so direct as to propose a prospect of marriage right to his face.

Mike does. What a surreal feeling it is, to be the one who knows what Will likes. What makes him blush, or shy away. What turns him on. To be the only one who knows these things.

Summary
It’s New York City’s hottest summer on record, and Mike and Will land the perfect post-grad serving job in one of the city’s finest restaurants. They’ve got loads of cash tips, two shiny new college degrees, a cigarette in each hand, and the whole city at their fingertips.
What starts as a sex joke written on an order ticket evolves into passing dirty notes with no goal other than embarrassing each other in front of customers. The sneakier, the filthier, the more absurd, the better.
Sometimes I think Chef should put you on the menu. You already look good enough to eat. -M

The lines of the joke blur when their smoke breaks in the alleyway start heating up into something else entirely.
Or: Mike and Will can only ask for what they really want when it’s in note form.
