“Wait, wait!”
Mike breathes out slowly, like she’ll scare Will away if she’s too loud. “Please. Please don’t leave.”
Will is facing her again, and—and Mike feels like she’s never been more present than right now, a foot apart in Jennifer’s tiny bathroom, and simultaneously like she’s on a whole different plane of existence. It’s so small in the bathroom that she’s been leaning heavily against the counter to make room; looking up at Will, who’s usually a few inches shorter, is making her feel lightheaded.
Mike bites her lip and whispers what she hopes will make Will stay.
“I’m sorry.”
She sucks in a breath. “I’ve been an asshole. Mostly to you, which is so much worse than if I’d just been an asshole to your girlfriend. But I’m sorry for that too. I’ll be better. I promise.”
Mike looks down, feeling preemptively embarrassed for what she’s about to say. “I wasn’t joking when I said I was jealous. You’ve spent all night with her, and I barely know anybody here. I know it’s stupid because I literally live with you, but I missed you tonight.”
Or: It's 1993, Mike is in a riot grrrl band, Will is being confusing and distant, and then everything implodes.

Summary
Caspian nods. “I was so scared. It feels like a distant memory now: how desperately afraid I was of being alone.”
Edmund can see him, young and bearded, just a little younger than how he looks now. He almost hears Caspian again, bitterly complaining, “I'm to go back alone… And what is the good of anything?"
Caspian’s face is calm like the silver sea: white lilies, sacred and still across the waters.
Yet his mouth tightens imperceptibly, “I don’t feel it now, I have a mind that sorrow and the sort don’t have an effect anymore. But that ache, it affected me my whole life. You were family to me. When Aslan told me you were to go on without me, it was terrible. I had never felt so abandoned.”
Edmund ends up again in Narnia, where a mysterious door awaits him. Edmund has trouble with God, not Aslan.
UPDATE: I've added a second chapter (a year later) finishing things up. Also edited it so it's now in third person rather than first (sorry, I don't know why I wrote it that way either)

Summary
Mike feels transparent—like he’s standing in front of a window where anyone could see him, but no one looks in. People say he’s distant, far away, but no, he’s here, it’s just no one wants to know him. Mike is very knowable. He thinks so anyway—thinks someone could come along and love him right and they’d see everything laid bare inside his abdomen, ready for dissection—that someone could love the viscera, fat, and muscle, and eat him up, with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.
Mike’s always liked that movie. He’d imagine himself as Clarice, chasing after some deviant killer, only he’s both Clarice and the deviant, chasing and chasing to unmask himself without this game he plays—the game of normalcy.
Or
Mike is keeping secrets—and being buried in them. No one really sees him. Will receives a phone call at one in the morning from Mike, who he hasn't talked to since he graduated college.

Summary
“It’s been a bad week.”
That’s what Mike tells Nancy when she makes the three hour drive from Boston to New York. She promptly slaps him across the cheek—the only time she’s ever laid a hand on him. If he’s honest, it’s been more than a week. Maybe a month. Maybe since El died. Maybe since he watched Will and El drive away to sunny California, with the flimsy promise of letters and spring breaks. In the relative safety of his own mind, Mike can admit it started when he was left behind by his best friend, experiencing the horror of losing your other half at twelve-years-old.
Or
El is dead, Will is falling in love with someone else, and Mike is depressed, manic, and doesn’t realize how loved he really is.
