Summary
“He’s all bark and no bite, really. He’s a good dog.”
Carter snorts. “Really?”
“Nah, he’s good.”
Scott lets himself imagine, if just for a second, being Kip’s dog. He can feel a phantom collar around his neck. Kip’s hand is still in his hair. His chest feels warm and he’s so so glad Carter and Kip are looking at the TV, not at him. He wills himself to appear normal because he’s sure the way his heart is thumping, the heat in his face, the giddy desire to do whatever Kip asks, even to be his dog if he wanted, isn’t normal.

Summary
Scott knows he’s a lucky guy. Between the scholarship — yes, even though he’s well-aware getting said scholarship was very much a result of him being an orphan— and finding Kip and finding a family that consists of his lovely husband, father-in-law, assorted former teammates, the spouses of those teammates, and now the children of those teammates, Scott knows he’s lucky. He thinks about how lucky he is all the time.
He was the first person to hold Jacob Vaughn other than Carter and Gloria. He and Kip are Jacob’s godfathers, and Scott definitely didn’t cry when Carter asked them if they would be his godfathers, thank you very much.
And now Jacob is 12.

Summary
Scott Hunter has a system, okay, and this system prevents bad things from happening. He's well-aware of what happens when he maintains his system and what happens when he fails to do so.
When he flickers the lights three times before leaving before a road trip, the team plane doesn’t crash. When he puts the silverware away just right, Kip stays safe. When he drums on the counter in that specific pattern, no career-ending injuries occur. When he cleans, makes sure the floors are spotless, he knows he’ll be okay and feels the buzzing energy in his hands dissipate. When he silently prays as he lies in bed next to Kip before falling asleep even though he’s not been a practicing Catholic for years, he knows things will be okay in the end.
As long as he does what he needs to do, it will be okay.
It's been getting worse.
