Summary
Camila remembers being young, starry-eyed and nervous, hope spreading heat through her veins as she whispered jokes into Lauren’s ear during boot camp. She wasn’t very funny, but Lauren always laughed before whispering back. They made fun of other contestants a lot, a streak that was almost mean. She remembers how terrifying it was to open up to Lauren then, because Camila never had a lot of friends, and she wanted Lauren to be her friend so badly she spent her nights dreaming up cool things to say to her. But it was the moments when she was most honest, filter failing her, that she felt the best, the most connected, like she and Lauren were special.
Camila leaves, Lauren goes to college, and Camila comes back. Sort of.

“It still doesn’t feel real,” Caitlyn said as they walked. “That the worst is over, that we’re standing on the other side.”
A flock of starlings swept free of the cliffs, and they paused to watch them go. Caitlyn adjusted the shawl again, the same wind that kicked the surface of the water into peaks blowing the hair back from her face. Vi’s breath lodged against her ribs, like a hand over her heart.
“Maybe there is no other side,” Vi said. “Maybe it’s all one thing.”

And this part is fun. Vi can't help that it feels good, in a petty way, flexing her status like this. She worries sometimes about the ways she's changed since crawling her way out of Zaun but this, the kick she gets out of turning the tables on rich upper city assholes, is in her blood. She twists in her seat, leaning one elbow back against the bar and, yep, there's Caitlyn absently nodding along to what the guy she's talking to is saying as she continues her lunatic vigil. She looks a bit startled to have been caught staring, but doesn't drop her gaze, only shifts on her feet across the room. Tuned in. Ready.
It’s rude to point, Caitlyn has scolded her dozens of times since Vi’s entry into Piltie society. So of course Vi takes particular pleasure in doing it now anyway, aiming her finger at Caitlyn through the crowd. “Her.”

As Alex puts it: “Kara. This is the dumbest thing you’ve ever done. And I’m including the time that you set fire to your own hair and nearly burned the house down trying to do some spell you found on MySpace to make Troy Bolton materialize in real life and marry you.”
Or: Lena and Kara go around New York City eating food and banging each other until their feelings eat away at them, and Alex tries not to have an aneurysm about it.

“Caitlyn,” she says. That isn’t right. That wasn’t the answer Vi was after. Names are easily given away but so seldomly remembered in Stillwater, but it echoes in Vi’s head. She almost doesn’t hear the actual answer. “And though I have no doubt a thousand people have given this answer before, I did nothing. I was doing my job, and then I was here. No trial. No sentencing. No crime to speak of.”

Half a decade into Vi's stay in Stillwater, a topsider turns up, raving about being a Councillor's daughter.
