“ Eddie hummed. “So I play this game, yeah?”

Harrington looked back at him with the scrunched brow that meant “dude, what?”

“Shut up. I play this game with some friends of mine where we like, go on adventures and shit. And you gotta make choices about what to do and where to go pretty often.”

    Eddie leaned forward.

“The unwritten rule of the game is that you should always choose whichever option would make the better story. Even if it seems really fuckin’ dangerous.” He leaned back again and matched Harrington’s cool guy shrug. ”

“You break it, you buy it, Munson.”

“Au contraire,” Eddie declares. He taps his fingers rhythmically against Steve’s arm, some kind of beat that only he recognises. “The customer is always right. So, if I break anything, you buy it!”

“That’s not how it works,” says Steve, flatly. He doesn’t do a very good job of hiding how funny he finds Eddie, which is both embarrassing and predictable. Always so predictable when it comes to Eddie. “Is there a reason you’re in here early?”

“You keep track of when I come in?”

“You’re the loudest customer we have; of course I know when you’re coming in.”

Eddie squints. He walks his fingers up Steve’s arms, cups his elbows, and leans in over the door between them.

“I think you wanna see me,” he contemplates. “So much so that you keep track of my times up here in this handsome, vapid expanse.” He taps his index finger to Steve’s forehead, smack bang in the centre, and grins. “Am I right, Stevie?”

Steve feels his face flush. “You think I’m handsome?” he says, stupidly, and then he follows it up with, “I thought I told you my name was Steve.”

    Bookmarker's Notes

“… I know it took you a while to get here. But, like, you guys knew, the thing is, loving each other isn’t enough to be here. You gotta put the work in. On yourself, on your relationship. There’s give, and there’s take, and there’s compromise and, like, so many small and huge things that go into a marriage. It’s work. And you guys put in the work. And not only that, but, like, you want to make each other better. You want to be better people for each other. Yeah, because it’s not just about love: it’s about growth. You aren’t the same people you were at twelve. You won’t be the same people at forty. You’re growing together, and you’re loving the people you’ve grown into. That’s — to be brave enough to do that, to know yourself and your partner enough to say that wherever our growth takes us, I’m going to love you and keep falling in love with you — that’s amazing. You guys are amazing. I’m so proud of you. I’m so happy I get to be here to watch you, that you’re here to do it. I, uh.” He swallowed, bit his lip. “You know I — that I — ”

“We know,” said Lucas. He had tears on his cheeks, and Max had her mouth twisted as she fought back some of her own, blinking up at the ceiling. “We know.”

This is a love story. Love between friends and family that isn’t superficial or fragmented. This story encapsulates what it means to love and be loved after life does things to challenge that. Family shows you that being afraid of love doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go after it.
