From 2014–2016, Shane and Ilya learn one another in fragments: in games and hotel rooms; in sleepless nights and unsettling dreams; in texts and sexts and all the private rituals that they mistake for habit.
But habit is only harmless until it starts keeping records. And repetition has a long memory for patterns.

“Zagreus,” Thanatos sighed, a low and lonesome sound. “What is it that you need from me?”
“Sleep,” came the choked reply. “Please. Whatever you must do. Anything to get me to sleep.”
Or: Zagreus traverses the Underworld in endless cycles, unable to find any rest; though he grows stronger each time that he perishes, his body refuses to let him sleep. For this, he seeks a begrudging Thanatos, who becomes his only respite.

Ilya’s hand wraps around his bare wrist and squeezes. Shane barely stops himself from collapsing to his knees.
The pressure lights up every receptor of his touch-starved nervous system, wrenching a small, pained noise from the back of his throat. Every muted sensation comes flooding back so intensely that it almost hurts. He needs Ilya to hold him down until there’s nothing inside him but quiet. He wants to sink into him and disappear.
It takes Shane an entire beat to remember where they are. Fighting against the fog in his mind, he manages to drag his gaze up to meet Ilya’s.
There’s a slow-dawning horror and understanding on Ilya’s face.
