It was in his eyes. It was in his furrowed brows that weren’t sad, angry, or confused, but something else - like hesitation or fear. Shane’s throat constricted for the nth time, as it had every time he replayed the moment today. Ilya was scared of whatever he was thinking, or maybe of what Shane would think about whatever he was thinking, or maybe worst of all, of Shane himself.
Ilya’s lip quivered in his mind, his chin trembling beneath wet lips and glazed eyes. ‘Shane,’ he had said, and closed his eyes, and thrown his head back. ‘Fuck, Shane, hit me.’
Or; Ilya thinks he deserves pain and antagonizes the Metros until he gets beat up badly, Shane wants to get it across to him that he deserves happiness.
