“Let’s say… the snowball became an avalanche.”Mike Wheeler had always known he loved Will Byers. It was a fact of life. The sky was blue. The sun would rise in the morning. Empire Strikes Back was the best Star Wars movie. Lucas’s favorite soda was Dr. Pepper. Mike loved Will.
He also knew that “love” had never been quite the right word, but it was the only one Mike could use to describe the feeling, the title of a much longer book.
When he looked at Will now, it was like someone had flipped the page to a new chapter and shoved it in his face. In big, bold letters, there were seven earthshattering words that Mike had never considered. Had maybe always felt but never considered.
Mike Wheeler thought Will Byers was attractive.
It didn’t mean anything. It didn’t mean Mike was…it didn’t. Everything was fine.
This was cool. Everything was cool.

Mike took a sip of his own cocoa, eyes drifting to the window. “It’s really coming down, huh? Kinda nice.”
Will looked at him instead of the snow.
“Yeah,” he whispered. “It really is.”
The living room glowed with soft Christmas lights, snow falling silently outside, Mike’s hand warm over Will’s toes. And for a moment, Will let himself imagine that this was how it would always be.

Summary
In the summer of 1989, the Byers family moves to Montauk, cutting short Mike and Will's last summer together before college. Certain he'll never see his friend again, Will confesses his love on their last night together, rocking Mike's world entirely. As the tear-filled goodbyes draw to a close, however, Mike is suddenly offered the unexpected opportunity to travel with the Byers family and help them move.
They have five days out of state together to address Will's confession, learn to communicate, and maybe, just maybe, say a few things they should have said all along.

Mike taps Will’s foot with his own. “I hate hearing you call me Lord Wheeler. You needn't do that.”
“We were not alone, your footman was scarcely two feet away,” Will says, rolling his eyes. “What would you rather have me say?”
Alone in the carriage, Mike lets his gaze fall to the pressed collar of Will's shirt, to the emerald silk of his waistcoat, round golden buttons leading down to fawn-coloured trousers that sit tight around his thighs. He exhales slowly. “I can think of a great many things I’d rather have you say.”
Pink stains Will's cheeks. “Not here,” he says quietly, before looking determinedly out of the carriage window.
Lord Michael Wheeler, only son and heir to the Duke of Richmond, has fallen hopelessly in love with London painter William Byers.

In which Mike just doesn’t think it’s right that Will doesn’t get to experiment with a guy, but luckily Mike’s a guy, and a good friend, so. Featuring closet hookups, hickeys, really good cuddles in the midst of all the sexual experimentation, sneaking around, a canon-typical amount of boys crying, the Painting Lie!!!, conversations about feelings that don’t actually address any of the important feelings (until they do, and then ohh boy), and the happy ending that they goddamn deserved.
Takes place during the eighteen month time gap before they all graduate, then continues past the ending of the finale.

(This is an ongoing process.) Featuring a domesticity speedrun, life in a university district in the early 1990s, mutual care-taking behaviors, baffling vegetables, Mike wearing a shirt with a kitten on it, and The Cure haunting the narrative.
