“I’m Aleksander,” he continues and she nods as if that explains why she’s in this strange room and why he opened the door because—
“Where is Matthias?” she asks, voice trembling just enough that she knows he noticed. “I was with him last night, I don’t—” she cuts herself off, shaking her head. It’s all just so confusing and her head has started to throb dully. “I don’t know how I got here. I don-don’t remember.”
Aleksander steps forward and when Alina doesn’t shy away he disentangles her hand from her dress where she’d been anxiously wringing it and leads her out of the room, throws a “Let’s go find him” over his shoulder with a wink and a smile. His hand is warm around hers and she clings to him trotting along to keep up with his long strides.

Summary
“I’m scared I’m not good enough for her,” he rasps, pushing past the lump in his throat. “That someday she’ll hate me for not knowing what to do.” It’s his worst fear, Gabi loathing him one day. And he knows he’s trying, but what use is that if it ends with him not being what she needs? Despair creeps closer and closer until he feels like he’ll suffocate from it.
It’s only when he feels Jess’s hand on his shoulder that he looks up. “None of that is true,” she says and backlit as she is by the light streaming through the open window, with her hair haloing her, he thinks she looks ethereal, otherworldly, angelic. “Let people help you, you don’t have to do any of this alone.”
Her words don’t soothe all the hurt and powerlessness he has felt for all of these months, but when he presses his forehead to Gabi’s little body where she’s held against Jess’s chest, and Jess’s fingers scratch through his hair until his body goes boneless and a bit limp, he believes for the first time, that maybe everything will be alright.
“Okay.”

She looks up when Aleksander opens the door and grins, big and beaming and he can feel himself unraveling under the force of her joyful expression, partly taken aback by her enthusiasm but still drawn to her — like she’s the sun and he’s a closely orbiting planet.
“I’m Alina,” she steps out from behind the table and comes closer to him, tilting her head back as she does to keep her gaze locked on his.
“Um.” He can feel his brain short circuiting — she’s just so cute — two buns on either side of her head, wide eyes crinkled from her smile, a fucking scrunched nose, and dimples. He’s a goner; he’s screwed; he’s fucking undone. “Alek— Sasha,” he stumbles over his words, feels a deep flush begin to work its way up his throat, heating his face. “You can call me Sasha.”
