Summary
Will's gone missing. Again.
Everyone panics after he doesn't turn up for a couple days and they've got zero leads. Mike's especially not handling it very well, considering things have been rocky between them since the Upside Down was destroyed. Buried under all the worry he struggles to keep reigned in around his friends is the most terrifying fear of all: for one, history repeating itself, but on top of everything, losing Will forever before he can make things right between them.

Summary
Summer, 1989. The Party has been trying to adjust to normalcy after the final battle. Mike's no stranger to trauma, but the wounds he's still nursing, both literally and figuratively, have left him feeling aimless and distant. The group of friends have been trying to enjoy the precious summer months they have left together before they all split off for college, self-discovery, what have you. Normal things teenagers in Hawkins are supposed to do. Like spending blistering afternoons cooling off by the lake, finally teaching Jane how to ride a bike, gorging themselves on ice cream, (definitely not talking about what's eating at him), and going to the movies. It's June, Ghostbusters II just came out, and while the boys have been dying to see it, the girls insist they see Dead Poets Society. In an unassuming movie theatre, Mike's completely unprepared for what a film about boys at a boarding school might help reveal about the most repressed parts of himself, once thought to have already been quelled forever.

"Arthur was the one thing that kept him from doing anything stupid; which lately, he tried often. The incident with the knife was the most recent stupid thing. He couldn’t help it the first time he’d used a blade against himself; all he’d wanted was relief. He needed to breathe and had felt the same way he was just feeling. He hadn’t lost too much blood and had patched himself up easily with his own magic as if nothing had happened, and if anyone were to look at his pale arm, there wouldn't be anything abnormal to notice. But Merlin had known what he’d done to himself.
And he kept on doing it.
Merlin wasn’t quite sure why he needed to slice at his skin whenever he felt on edge and overwhelmed, but… he had been around for well over a thousand years, and that seriously messed up his head. Or, at least, that’s what he kept telling himself every time he hurt himself."

Summary
“Come on,” Mike argues. “Think of it like… a test drive. You’ll get the full Mike Wheeler boyfriend experience. It’s miserable! You’ll be over me in no time!”
They only have one last summer before they go off to college, and Will is sick of keeping his cards so close to his chest. So, in a fit of alcohol-induced bravery, he tells Mike everything.
Instead of breaking his heart, Mike proposes a deal: they’ll date for the summer. Get Mike out of Will’s system, show him he makes for a lousy boyfriend anyway, and make sure there aren’t any what-ifs waiting for him in New York.
No stone left unturned, after all.
Or: Summer brings clouds, nostalgia, and the all-consuming fear of change. They deal with it.

Summary
After Mike's head hits the pavement during the MAC-Z battle, he starts acting strange. The world is loud. Everyone smells weird. Will is pretty. His teeth really hurt.
As the military hunts Will down, Mike learns what it truly means to protect the one person he loves more than life itself. The voice in his head encourages him. It gets louder. Hungrier. Until Mike fully succumbs to its force.
