Worry darkens her pale face and I consider allowing her near me. I can’t do much anyway. I’m at her mercy. She moves toward me at a slow pace, trying her best not to scare me, I guess. I relax a bit, tiredness winning over fear. She sits in front of me, dropping abruptly on the sand.
“You’re a mermaid!”
She whispers excitedly.
