Summary
In the late 1990s, Professor Aldo Bellini made a swift exit from the Gregorian Pontifical University in Rome and the priesthood altogether, bound for a new life in New York City. In doing so, he lost touch with his best friend, the future-cardinal Thomas Lawrence. The pair would not reunite for over twenty years, until Cardinal Lawrence — by then Dean of the College of Cardinals — shocked the world by abandoning his post on the cusp of a historic conclave, which many believed would end with him as pope.
Although Lawrence has since kept a low profile and refused all requests for comment from the media, trusted sources have confirmed that he left Rome in the company of Mr. Bellini, and the two have been spotted together in Manhattan several times since the election of Pope Innocent XIV. According to Lawrence’s former staff, the Dean cited “a glimpse” as the sole explanation for his disappearance.
This is that glimpse, the version of events where Thomas followed Aldo several years after the professor’s initial departure in 1998.

One would think that the raging homophobia and fascistic tendencies would prevent Bishop Tedesco from shamelessly flirting with other members of the Curia. At the very least, one would hope he would be self aware about it.

Summary
“You what?”
“I said I love you, Thomas.” More stuffing of papers and stationary, and Aldo Bellini was normally so careful with things.
“You…can’t. You shan't say that.”
“Well, I’m sorry if it’s a burden to you. But I already said it.”
Thomas’ collar itched and he ran a nervous hand along the back of his neck to still the feeling. “Aldo, I teach canon law for Heaven’s sake. We are ordained ministers. You can’t possibly think I can reciprocate a desire that even the most progressive among our brothers recognize as disordered.”

Summary
From the moment he first stepped out onto the balcony in St. Peter’s Square as Innocent XIV, Vincent Benítez knew that the days of his papacy were numbered. And yet, when a costly mistake forces him to resign, he doesn’t come prepared for the grief the loss of his office causes him.
Thomas Lawrence naively liked to think that he wouldn’t live to see the end of Innocent’s papacy. He never could have imagined that he, of all people, would be the one responsible for it.
Lost and with their hearts filled with both guilt and unexplored desires, they struggle to navigate the shambles of the life they knew. They find refuge in a place where they least expect it – an old, ramshackle farmhouse in the middle of nowhere, that’s just as desperate for love and forgiveness as them.
Or: The one where Vincent and Thomas get the retirement they both deserve and finally allow themselves to love each other.
