The effect is immediate: silence falls at a speed Tony couldn't match even in the Iron Man suit, and every head in the hotel room jerks toward him. Several people go literally slack-jawed.
Including Steve, unfortunately, which doesn't do much for the credibility of a lie that needs all the help it can get.

It's a stupid lie, but in Tony's defense, he didn't expect anyone to call him on it.
