    As it turns out, a life without regrets involves:
    1. Avoiding all attempts to be adopted so you can launch your career as a rogue-cultivating-assassin, while
    2. Juggling a hit-list comprised of the cultivation world’s Who’s Who, and
    3. Desperately missing your not-boyfriend who picked the worst ever timing to confess his undying love for you.

    "Is that something that Wei Ying would like?" Lan Wangji asks softly, carefully, "To be kept?"

    There's that fleeting, lost look in Wei Ying's eyes once more, and Lan Wangji thinks it's unacceptable - That Wei Ying had not felt welcomed in his own home, so much so that he decided to wander the world away from it. So much so that he is afraid that he would be unwelcome as well elsewhere.

    Lan Wangji barely stops himself from hissing, from letting the steam of his icy breath escape in the close air between them. He only vaguely remembers the Jiangs, a young Cultivation Clan barely a century old, but his disdain towards them feels ancient now in the wake of all this. How foolish of them, to simply let go of someone so bright, someone so unfailingly kind and giving. 

    How convenient, for Lan Wangji's own gain.

    At sixteen Wei Wuxian is—through some strange twist of fate, or a nick in the layer between parallel universes, who knows—out of the blue confronted with that one incense burner dream one night.

    While his curious mind is left unable to stop poking at this new perspective on Lan Wangji, circumstances in the Cloud Recesses begin to change and Wei Wuxian is suddenly presented with life-altering opportunities.

    Maybe Gusu isn’t so bad after all?

    (Or alternatively: The fic where I get to give Wei Wuxian the academic scholarship he deserves while simultaneously getting him hitched early on.)

    The Yiling Patriarch is the most powerful and respected cultivator of his generation.

    Wei Wuxian doesn’t give credence to all those rumors, he’s just a simple rogue cultivator who roams the land. No matter what friends he makes or how much he enjoys himself, he always finds himself packing up and leaving after a season.

    When he arrives in Gusu, he doesn’t intend on being there for long, but insistent juniors and a certain sect leader have him staying at the Cloud Recesses for the winter. That is fine, as he plans to continue to walk his lonely path next spring.

    However, never did he imagine he would be meeting someone like Lan Wangji.
