Summary
Ilya adjusted his arms and Shane flinched then blushed.
”Shane…” Ilya said, almost desperately.
”I’m sorry. I probably shouldn’t have done this. I thought I’d relax once you’re here and we could, you know, but I think I just can’t. I’m sorry, you can go.”
”I did not drive up here to fuck you, I was not expecting that.” Ilya said directly, hoping this would put to rest the issue and allow them to get at whatever was really bothering Shane.
”Why, then?” Shane asks, his eyes watery, “Why are you here?”
”I was hoping, maybe, you can tell me this.” Ilya said, slowly taking Shane’s hand to avoid startling him.
”Shane…I know something is wrong. Please.”

Ilya accidentally triggers something with Shane that he struggles to understand. He blames himself for doing something terrible before slowly figuring out something worse is going on. Shane, meanwhile, is sure if he suppresses and toughs it out he’ll be okay eventually.
Doesn’t really follow a timeline in the books super well, but sometime when they both definitely have feelings they haven’t admitted to yet. Features a lot of guilt, misunderstandings, difficulty sharing and knowing how to be there for someone.

Summary
When Dallas texts him, I’m flying in Tuesday, getting in at 11:45, Shane thinks of all the things he might do instead, alone. He thinks there is a world in which he could say, I can’t today, but the text is not a question, the ticket is already bought, Kent never asks him if he’s welcome first. Kent picks up and flies to another city, because he knows he’s welcome, he knows Shane will let him inside. There was a moment, back in September, when Shane might have asked himself if he wanted this—is this the man you want to sleep with? Is this the way you want to spend your time? Are you having fun? It doesn’t matter. This is the person who wants to be with him.He wonders if this is how Ilya felt about him. Impassive.
Or: After an unexpected encounter just before the start of the 2016-17 season, Shane falls into a casual relationship with Dallas Kent. He doesn't meet Rose Landry. He doesn't set foot in Ilya's house outside of Boston. (There is no tuna meltdown.) He stops waiting for Ilya Rozanov to text him back. It's fine, until it isn't.

Summary
It happens in a fraction of a second. David rolls his eyes playfully, in a way he has done a thousand times before. With that, he reaches out for Shane’s cheek—for a playful shove, Ilya will realise much later.
He does not think. One moment he’s sitting on the couch, the next he’s standing before Shane with his hands held in front of his face, shielding him from a blow that does not come.

Ilya follows because someone says Shane needs him.
That is all it takes.
By the time Shane realises Ilya is gone, there is a gap in the camera footage, a dark van leaving the loading bay, and a message from Ilya’s phone that does not sound like Ilya at all.
OR
