Summary
Yuna slides a folder on the table closer, pulling out two packets of paper. She’d gone all out with the contracts. Mainly, Shane suspected, to ease his nerves about the lines of the relationship. Plus, she was always nothing if not prepared.
She hands one contract to Shane, then another to Rozanov. “As a reminder, this is not legally binding. If either of you wants out early, can’t meet obligations, or wants to change things down the line, that is perfectly fine, and we can work with that. This just lays out the exact timeline of the relationship,” she begins, “down to the start and end dates."
- or, Shane and Ilya never start hooking up in 2010. So eight years later, after they both come out on their own, Yuna Hollander —momager of the century — decides that a PR relationship would be very beneficial for her son and his infamous rival. And everything definitely goes exactly according to plan... or something like that. -

Summary
Shane turns over, and as he does, Ilya slips his other arm beneath Shane’s neck. They kick the covers away completely, allowing a little bit of cool air to wash over them. Shane’s arm slings over Ilya’s waist.
“Hi,” he murmurs, blinking at him. He looks so tired, like he’s fighting sleep to make sure Ilya is okay.
“Hi,” Ilya whispers. “You can sleep.”
“What w’s your dream about?”

“What are you doing out here so early?” Shane finally asks. Ilya doesn’t respond for a few seconds.
“Talking to my mother,” he says. Shane turns his head slightly so that he can place a kiss to Ilya’s bicep.
“That’s sweet,” he whispers. “Do you talk to her often?”
Ilya nearly crushes his cigarette between his fingers. It's been so long since he spoke about his mother to anyone. He's forgotten how to voice his grievances to someone else.

Summary
The sight of the blooming bruise on Ilya's skin is so fucking hot, Shane leaves a second one, just an inch away from the mark that the California girl left.
“Marking your territory, Hollander?” Ilya jokes. He’s teasing, but he’s so fucking hard underneath Shane, it’s obvious he likes this. Because yes, Shane is doing exactly that. In the coming weeks, until these bruises fade, every time Rozanov goes to hook up with someone else, he’ll see these bruises and be reminded that Shane was here.

Summary
The Solari warrior is on their back, and Finn manages to pin down one wrist with his foot and the other with his hand, his silver dagger pressed to their neck. It’s this moment that, through their helmets, they lock eyes. They both go stone still.
Finn knows those eyes. He knows them well, even if it's been two years since he's seen them this up close. He’s looked into them a million times, in the most intimate of settings imaginable. “Dane,” he says, his voice hollower than he’d like.
But Dane sounds just as shocked when he murmurs, “Finn.”
They stare at each other for a moment. Finn’s blade is still pressed against Dane’s throat, the edge just barely digging into the flesh. Not enough to cut the skin, but enough to keep Dane from moving if he wants to keep his head attached to his body. Despite the dagger, Dane chuckles. “Makes sense that it’s you,” he finally says. “I can’t imagine there are many Lunare warriors who could best me.”
- or, two years into the war, Finn and Dane find each other in the woods while on patrol. A lot ensues.

Summary
Life feels so chaotic for Shane sometimes, with all the loud noises and the unwritten rules he’s expected to follow, even though no one ever taught them to him. It’s why the bookstore feels more like home to him than anywhere else in Boston. It doesn’t ask Shane to be anything other than himself. Doesn’t ask for any more than he can give.
He can just exist here.
Shane likes slow, likes taking his time. And Ilya - without saying or doing anything in particular - makes Shane feel like that’s okay. Like he isn’t doing anything wrong by standing still sometimes.
(Or, Shane works in a bookstore, Ilya plays hockey, and they both go to the same college. They fall in love in every universe.)

Summary
Svetlana could give Ilya everything Shane could not.
She shared his language, his culture, and knew what it was like living in Russia–she didn’t have to try and learn Russian in secret so if Ilya wanted to just talk freely with her he could. She’d known Ilya his whole life, known his father and brother and, most importantly, his mother–the most precious person to Ilya. She could date Ilya, in public, and it wouldn’t cause a scandal–Ilya wouldn’t have to sacrifice his country to be with her or have to secure citizenship somewhere safe just so that if people found out he wouldn’t get arrested. She could stay with Ilya during the hockey season and share his space–she could get groceries with him and argue with him in the produce aisle about what to make for dinner that week. She could love Ilya, freely, and Shane could not.
In the end it was not about Ilya or even Svetlana at all really. It was about what Shane could not be, what he could not give, to the person he loved most.
OR: Shane and Svetlana meet for the first time and Shane battles with his insecurities.

Ilya knew, right from the very moment he met Shane Hollander, that he would never be good enough for him. He’d seemed so…pristine, when they first met. Untouched. And Ilya knew his unclean hands would only dirty him up. He’s always been selfish, though; his father used to tell him that.
So it’s no surprise, really, that Shane has finally gotten tired of it. Of him, always needing more from Shane than he deserves - always begging for more than he has earned.
Ilya would leave himself, too, if he could.
(Or, five time Ilya thought Shane would leave, and one time he knew he wasn’t going anywhere.)
