Summary
When Henry sells their family's farms and leaves her and Ada with nothing, Agnes must do what she feels is necessary. She accepts the proposal of Arnold Van Rhijn - a wealthy yet terribly difficult man - and assures herself that it is a matter of duty, nothing more. Duty to her sister, to their family name, and to the life she is determined to build for them from the wreckage their brother left behind.
What she doesn't account for, however, is the sheer weight of it all.
