In the light, the recognition is immediate. To think the new global powers still teach their dogs about what should be no more than a footnote on Albert Wesker's biography is alarming. Or, perhaps, simply the fact that the man before you is not Wesker is exactly why he knows you.

He had always thought that Wesker was sparing with praise. He hadn’t noticed the superlatives until they dried up: Chris, you’re the best shot we have, you’re the best one for this job, you’re one of my best men.
And Chris wouldn’t be worried about it—isn’t worried about it—except that performance reviews are coming up, and he’s no longer actually sure what Wesker’s comments will look like.
One day Captain Wesker comes into the office and won't look Chris in the eye.

Summary
If someone were to ask why River holds room in his heart for Spider, he might say something half true like, “I’ve known him a long time.” Or “we grew up together.” Or maybe even a straight up lie like, “he hasn’t always been like this.”
It probably lies in the same reasoning as to why he humiliates himself for Lamb’s approval, or why he feels the closest to Louisa when she’s pissed at him. He’s some sort of masochist. He didn’t get enough attention as a kid. He has a humiliation fetish. Whatever the reason, River feels a terrible overwhelming sense of fondness for Spider. How awful.
