Work Text:
Johnny spread his blue, star spotted blanket out on the damp grass. He patted out all the wrinkles so it was evenly spread to it's furthest lengths. He shifted himself onto the blanket and laid on his side, looking at the moon. His hand rested on his wrist, which was wrapped around with bandages from an earlier incident that same day. He winced every time he touched it. It stung pretty good, even while it was all wrapped up.
Despite the pain, he tried not to make it seem it was bothering him. His companion sat across him on the other side of the fireplace, leaning against his horse, gulping down the very last drops of water in his canteen. He let out a deep breath when he moved the canteen away from his mouth. He scratched his checker-like beard and adjusted his hat. He looked over at his friend who seemed to be a little uncomfortable on his blanket.
"Eh… Johnny?" He spoke up.
"Yeah?" Johnny's eyes shifted towards him.
Gyro cleared his throat. "How are you doing?" He said nonchalantly.
Johnny rolled his eyes and turned his head away from him. Shifting his position a little every now and then, trying to figure out the best way to ignore this vexing wound.
"You know it was an accident.-"
"That damned dino nearly killed me Gyro!" Johnny cried. "How can you trust him like that?"
Gyro paused for a second. "Who said I trusted him? He's not exactly on anyone's side as far as I know."
"As far as you know, Gyro. " Johnny added.
"I wouldn't trust Diego even if Jesus rose from the ground right now and told me to." He claimed.
The Italian chuckled. "You're as pertinacious as always. That's what I always liked about you ever since we met." He looked up at the sky and grinned. Johnny picked his head up and looked at him, whose smile was growing bigger.
"...What's that supposed to mean?" He asked him. He looked back at Johnny. "What, pertinacious?"
"No, I mean- You- N-Nevermind! Forget it." He waved his hand frustratedly.
"He's… Always liked me?" He thought to himself.
Gyro began to hum a soft tune. This one was… actually pretty catchy. And familiar? It was like something Nicolas hummed whenever he used to brush and pet his horse. It gave him a warm, tingling sensation behind.
A feeling of bittersweet nostalgia, taking him back to when he was younger, watching his brother, idolizing him, admiring him away from the racetrack. He wanted to sing along. He really wanted to. But something inside repressed the action. He just couldn't.
He solemnly looked at his peaceful horse who was already fast asleep. She would snort every now and then and her tail would sometimes flick like a leather whip. A soft twinkling noise emerged from within him and a soft creature-like chirping noise came out. It tried to sync along with Gyro's singing. And though it wasn't perfect, it tried it's best to sing along even if it couldn't perfectly join him in harmony.
Curious, Johnny peeped behind him and he couldn't believe his eyes.
His Tusk was floating next to Gyro singing along with his tune.
"Chu~mi! Chu~mi mi! Mi mi mi~n!" It chirped.
Gyro smiled at the pink little thing and patted it's head. He continued to hum some more, but louder to encourage the stand to project it's voice. It moved it's arms around as if it were a singer in a classic Italian opera. Spinning around in the air for dramatic effect too.
Gyro finished his tune with one lasting note, that resonated for a few seconds. Tusk followed too of course, trying to sing as low as it possibly could.
As he opened his eyes, they were directly locked on Johnny. He was caught off guard watching his stand perform in front of the fireplace and his face faded into red in no time.
He opened his mouth trying to figure out what to say. Gyro stood up and walked over to him.
"We should do things like that more often, Johnny. After all, we make a great duet~" He gave a big smile. His signature grills illuminated from the campfire.
Johnny smiled back. "Yeah. We do make a great team."
