Chapter Text
"Five wounded! Two unconscious with severe burns. One with a deep cut on the left leg, he's losing a lot of blood."
The stretchers glided through the stark emergency room to their destinations while the nurses gathered around the EMTs to gather as much information as they could. We usually didn't have this many come in all at once, something big must have happened.
Nonetheless, we could handle it.
"Bring the burn victims to room seven. I can get started on them." I stated, grabbing the end of one of the stretchers and splitting it off from the rest of the group, "Send the doctor my way once you've got that bleeding under control."
With a quick nod between all of us, we all went off. Each of our quirks were better suited for certain injuries. Mine happened to be the most helpful with the burns.
My tennis shoes squeaked across the tile as I helped pull the patients to the designated room.
"What happened?" I asked the young EMT hurrying next to me.
"There was a robbery. I guess the bank employees complied but the crooks set fire to the place anyways. The heroes barely got them out in time." He answered.
Rushing into the room, we gently set up each patient with an IV and oxygen before he left. I took a look over each of them, assessing what needed to be done.
"____, can you do it? I know it's been raining all day. Don't you need the sun?" Another nurse, and also my friend, Seiko questioned, peeking their head through the door.
I slipped off my plastic gloves and nodded, "Yeah, I can do it. It'll just make me a little exhausted, but I'll be okay."
I approached the unconscious older lady and placed my hand on her chest, closest to her lungs.
They're weak from the smoke. I can feel it.
"Ma'am, I don't think you can hear me, but this might feel a little intense." I warned.
I took a deep breath and began.
After a few moments, her skin brightened up. The dark red burn wounds on her shoulders and arms dulled and shrunk in size. The short quick breaths she was taking before slowed and became fuller. Her eyes fluttered open.
"Hello ma'am? You're at the Musutafu hospital. Can you tell me your name?" I asked softly, waving Seiko to come in and take over so I could go over to the other patient.
"I-I had it under control..." The older lady mumbled, looking a bit dazed, "Those heroes..."
Somewhat confused, I continued, "Uhm, nurse Seiko here is going to help you out now. Let them know if there's anything you need okay? But I'm sure the police will be by soon to ask you questions about the incident."
"Those burns look a lot better! Can you tell me your name?" My friend began, nodding to me that they could take it from there.
I walked across the room to the other patient laying there completely out. This one was a male probably in his mid thirties. His burns were much worse than hers, it was going to take more work. After sanitizing my hand, I repeated the process I had done moments before.
I blinked hard, trying to focus on his face, but everything was starting to double.
"S-sir, can you hear me?" I asked out of breath, grabbing on to the stretcher for balance, "You're at the... the, uh... hospital."
To be honest I wasn't even really paying attention if he was responding. Before I realized it, my knees got weak and I was on my way face first towards the floor.
"Hey!" Seiko caught me quickly in their arms, but the room was still spinning, "Dude are you okay?"
"Bitchin'." I half laughed.
I realized I probably shouldn't have said that in front of my patients, but I literally just gave them so much of myself, they could deal with it.
Swinging my arm over their shoulder, Seiko helped me stand, "He's conscious. Let's go get you to the break room to rest and I'll finish this up, okay?"
Before I could protest, my knees began giving out again.
"Yeah, okay."
"Why the hell aren't you sleeping?"
Seiko chastised, their red horns looking a bit more intimidating in that moment.
My body was slumped against half of one of the break room couches, phone in hand. As drained as I was, I could never bring myself to sleep at work. It felt too vulnerable, even in the room with the beds intended for the staff who were working overtime.
"I am, see." I closed my eyes temporarily and let my mouth hang open, peeking one eye open to see if they bought it.
The cushion next to me sank, "You need to take care of yourself better. You overworked your quirk, the doctors could've taken over when it got too much."
I kicked my feet over their legs and sighed, "I know, but I'm an overachiever."
"You're stupid, that's what you are." They replied bluntly, picking at their teeth.
Offended, I playfully smacked the back of their head, making their shaggy black locks fall in their face. Seiko chuckled and shook the pieces back in place.
"Are the patients alright?"
"Yeah. Everyone who came in is stable now. Are you okay?" Seiko asked, untying my shoelaces that were conveniently on their lap.
"Will you cut it out!" I jerked my feet away, putting my phone down on the couch before bending over to tie my shoes, "I feel better yeah. Still really tired but I don't think I'll pass out or anything."
A couple other employees walked in the break room and waved hello, grabbed their dinner from the fridge, then headed out again.
"Well I already talked to the rest of the nurses on shift and we are all okay- no let me rephrase. We all want you to go home early and get some rest. Think of it as punishment for overdoing your quirk again."
I crinkled my nose, not wanting to go home, but knowing it was probably for the best.
"____! Are you on that adoption website again?" Seiko gasped.
I looked up at them and realized they were on my phone.
"Seiko! Give that back!" I reached but they easily dodged, their slender arms much longer than mine.
"You already have two strays at your apartment, you're really going to get another pet?" They asked wide eyed, scrolling through the website and completely ignoring my reach.
Knowing I wouldn't be able to get it as long as they wanted to keep it away from me, I sighed and slouched back into the couch. Almost immediately Seiko gave me my phone back.
"I can't help it. I see these animals without a home and I just want to take care of them, give them a better life, ya know?" I replied honestly.
With a quick pat on the back, my friend laughed, "I love that about you, but maybe put some of that energy towards yourself too, hmm?"
"Look at you, being all wise."
Seiko flashed me a charming smile and stood, stretching their hand out to me, "Let's get you a cab. I'll pick you up for work tomorrow and you can drive your car back home then."
Before I could say anything, I was being dragged out the door and forced to go home.
