Chapter 1: everything does not stay

Chapter Text

Philza Minecraft was exhausted.

When Tommy, his youngest child, was born, Phil’s wife passed away.

The child cried. And cried. And cried. Phil did his best, he really did, but Tommy would not be comforted.

I’m sad too, Phil wanted to snap, but Tommy did not understand. He only cried more, because his mother was not alive to hold him.

Phil grew tired of the child’s incessant crying. When Technoblade was born, his cries were few and far between. When Wilbur was born, his cries were soft and hardly a nuisance.

But Tommy, having no beautiful, loving mother to hold him, would not turn out the same. He screamed and cried all day and all night and Phil was just exhausted.

So he began to leave.

He’d have Techno promise to take care of Tommy and then he’d leave. He’d travel around and feel great joy being away from his children, although he missed Techno and Wilbur.

After a while, Phil stopped asking Techno to take care of Tommy.

When Tommy was four, Phil would leave for months and write to Techno and Wilbur.

Not Tommy.

Tommy was smart; he could read, and knew basic addition already. What a smart boy, Wilbur always praised, and Tommy was the happiest kid on the planet.

But he missed his dad.

So when Phil was home, Tommy clung to the man like mud to a shoe. He talked endlessly about everything that happened, about the new book he read, about the game he played, about how smart he was getting and how he was going to be just like Phil and—

“Would you just shut up?!” He snapped at the 4 year old who stood barely at his knee.

Tommy had immediately shrank away, apologies hot on his tongue.

Phil only sighed and left again.

Funny story; Philza Minecraft never fucking came back. He stopped writing, and he simply never returned.

Tommy wasn’t quite the same. He still spoke loudly and talked a lot, but if anyone even looked at him, he’d go silent.

He developed a strong discomfort for eye contact.

When Tommy was 8, Technoblade left.

The two were fairly close; Techno, who was 15, read Tommy bedtime stories of Greek heroes.

Tommy’s favorite was Theseus. He saved everyone and slayed the monster, but his forgetfulness caused his father to die.

Tommy was much like Theseus, in a way. He was intelligent and strong and cool but his father left because he couldn’t shut up.

Technoblade left to find Phil.

He wanted to know if the man was alive.

Tommy cried like he had as a baby that night. Wilbur was ever-kind to him, comforting him with songs and stories.

When Tommy was 12, Wilbur left, too.

Wilbur was 18.

Tommy missed him immediately. Wilbur had left for a girl he loved and a baby he cherished, and Tommy didn’t mind it as much.

Wilbur left to take care of his family, so at least the kid wouldn’t turn out like Tommy.

But being alone does things to your mind.

Tommy, at the age of 14, came to the conclusion that people left because he was so shitty.

He never shut up, so Phil left.

He was a hassle to take care of, so Techno left.

He wasn’t enough for Wilbur, so Wilbur left.

Knowing this, Tommy decided he would only speak when necessary.

He met Tubbo. A bee-loving chaotic boy whose only parental figure was an alcoholic; an alcoholic who had loved him, but had drunk himself to death.

He met Ranboo. A walking disaster who managed to still be a lovely person, who couldn’t remember anything about his family, if he’d had one.

Via his wonderful friends, at the age of 16, Tommy decided that people did not leave because of him.

People left because people fucking sucked.

Phil left because he couldn’t handle his kid.

Techno left because he liked his dad more than his little brother.

Wilbur left because his family would always be more important than Tommy (to be fair, Tommy isn’t very mad about this).

That’s how Tommy became a villain.

Tubbo was a vigilante who broke the law to put away criminals, and if he sometimes worked with Tommy then that was nobody’s business but theirs.

Ranboo was both a vigilante and a villain. He saved those in need and also robbed banks.

Tommy simply caused destruction. His family left because he was a nuisance?

Oh, he’d show them a nuisance.

Dream was…an unexpected factor.

Tommy didn’t mind dropping off the face of the Earth, but he did mind Dream.

Not that anybody cared.
