Chapter Text
“You’re all set to go, right?” Iwaizumi asked, sitting in Oikawa’s room.
“Mhm! I finished packing last night. My parents helped. Thanks for agreeing to drive me Iwa-chan.” Oikawa smiled warmly.
“Of course, I wouldn’t miss the last chance to see you before you leave.” Iwaizumi checked the time. “We should go, you don’t wanna be late, and I assume you want to go around the duty-free for a while.”
“You know me so well. Let’s go!” Oikawa grabbed one of his suitcases, and Iwaizumi took the second.
“Are you sure you don’t want to say a last goodbye to your parents, or your sister?”
“You know my parents, besides I’m gonna keep a close contact with all of them. Can’t let Takeru forget me.”
“You’re not the kind of person people forget easily.”
“Is that supposed to be a compliment?”
“You tell me.” Iwaizumi smiled, and grabbed his car keys. The two took the suitcases outside, loading them to the back of Iwaizumi’s car.
Oikawa had told his friends about his plans to move a couple of months earlier, shortly after their graduation. Makki and Mattsun were surprised, but Iwaizumi knew why.
“Argentina? Are you sure? That’s so far away,” Mattsun said.
“I made up my mind a long time ago. I’m telling you so we can all stay in contact.”
“I mean… You seem pretty serious about it. Of course we’ll stay in contact.” Makki smiled.
And with that it was sealed. Iwaizumi was the one who helped Oikawa prepare for the move fully. Making sure he spoke enough Spanish in case English wasn’t enough, that Oikawa had a resume so he could get some job after the move, and got Oikawa a place to live in. Oikawa had joked and asked Iwaizumi why he was stubborn about taking care of him, and Iwaizumi just rolled his eyes. But, we all want the people we love to be okay.
“Alright, we’ll be at the airport in twenty minutes, are you sure you have everything?” Iwaizumi asked one last time.
“Yes, I’m sure. Let’s just go, I don’t want to get stuck in the long queues.”
“Okay. Just making sure.” Iwaizumi started the car and drove away, Oikawa stretched his neck back, to catch one more glimpse of his childhood home, tears pooling his eyes. He quickly wiped them away, and turned back to look at the road.
“Excited?”
“Yeah. Excited, scared, a bit of both. It’s a big change.”
“For sure. But you have nothing to worry about.”
“And why is that?”
“Because you still have a bunch of friends back here at home, because I don’t remember a single time you were in a new situation and didn’t conquer it immediately. So you’re gonna be just fine.”
“Aww Iwa-chan!” Oikawa smiled widely. “You really think that?”
“Obviously. Otherwise I wouldn’t have said it.”
“Thank you. That actually helps me a lot.”
They spent the rest of the car ride in a comfortable silence, just enjoying each other’s company. They didn’t know when the next time they’ll see each other will come, and they both intended to soak each other’s presence for as long as they could, until it was time to say goodbye.
Soon Iwaizumi parked outside the airport. “Want me to come with you? At least until security.”
Oikawa sighed in relief. “That will be great, yes.” They both grabbed one suitcase each. If you didn’t know better, it looked like they were going together, but their faces told another story.
They walked together, hands brushing occasionally. It took everything in Iwaizumi not to grab Oikawa’s hand, to beg him to stay. He couldn’t do that.
“So…” Oikawa said, standing near the security stand.
“So…” Iwaizumi chuckled nervously. “This is harder than I thought.”
“Yeah…” Oikawa started looking down, but then was pulled into a tight hug. It took him a moment to react, before hugging back.
“Go conquer Argentina for me.” Iwaizumi’s voice was shaking, as tears started rolling down his cheeks.
Oikawa sniffled. “I will. Don't worry. Write to me okay? I want real letters. I’ll write back. I’ll call you every night too if you want me to.”
“I’ll write. I promise, and call whenever I can.” They slowly let go of the hug, but their arms were still slightly wrapped around each other. Oikawa found himself leaning down slightly, and Iwaizumi tilted his face up, and one of his hands moved to cup Oikawa’s cheek, until their lips met in a light kiss. It was a little hesitant, and for a moment neither of them was sure what to do before they slowly pulled away.
“I- I have to go now,” Oikawa said, his eyes were red.
“I know. Go.” Oikawa took both his suitcases, and looked back at Iwaizumi. “I’ll miss you.”
“I’ll miss you too, Tooru.” and with that, they said goodbyes. Once Iwaizumi got back to his car, he buried his face in his hands, bawling until his voice was rough.
What he didn’t know, that inside the airport, Oikawa was doing his best to hold back his own tears until he had time to sit down at the gate.
