Work Text:
The sky is dark.
Anne and her girlfriend are in her living room, celebrating her 16th birthday.
They’ve done all the sleepover stuff already; Now they’re just talking.
“Are you sure you don’t want to do something else?” Sasha asks, staring at her nails.
“Yep. This is the perfect way to spend my ‘Sweet 16’.” Anne says, before nudging Sasha.
She grabs the remote.
“I wonder what’s on TV?”
The first channel that clicks on is the news.
The volume is low, but Anne can still make out what the man on the news is saying.
“Today marks the second year anniversary of ‘Frog-Vasion’, and hopefully we can move forward into a place of peace without murderous lizards invading our planet.”
Sasha looks at Anne. Anne’s face is blank.
She tries to put her hand on Anne’s shoulder. Anne flinches away.
The memories she tried so hard to block out had come flooding through.
The gems shattering in her hands.
Her eyes and hair are glowing white.
Sprig begging her to stay.
Cracks forming on her body.
Her last words.
Fading away.
Dying.
Anne can hear Sasha trying to snap her out of it, but it’s not really working.
“Anne. Anne!” Sasha cries out, watching her girlfriend stare into oblivion.
“Why- Why did no one tell me that I died on my birthday?” Anne’s shaking, and her voice cracks as she speaks.
“I didn’t want you to know,” Sasha admits.
“First, we- we get stranded, then Marcy moves away, and now this?” Anne asks.
“... Is my birthday cursed?”
Sasha hugs Anne, and Anne sits while hugging her back.
