He didn’t mean to. It all happened so fast. He heard the sound. Like a pinball crashing into the sides of his skull. Nigel fell against the wall and slid down, leaving a swatch of blood in his wake. His hand slackened until the elaborate grip of his gun hit the ground and came to a stop at Adam’s feet.
No thoughts. He grabbed it. Held it in his hands like he saw Nigel do a million times. He flicked the little lever. It’s live now, Gorgeous .
He swung around, putting himself between Nigel slumped against the wall and the cause of it. Only point it at something you want to kill. Adam took a deep breath, blinking the tears from his eyes. He couldn’t see, but he could hear shouts from the person who did this. Keep your eyes open. Aim properly now.
He could almost feel the way Nigel’s breath felt hot and humid on the back of his neck, under his ear when he whispered to him right before he kissed that spot.
Would he ever feel that again?
Adam let out a guttural scream and squeezed the trigger. Don’t pull it, squeeze it.
The bullet left the barrel and Adam tightened his grip, remembering the last time he had fired it, when Nigel taught him, he had been so scared of the noise and the vibrations he felt through the grip that he dropped it. Holy hell, Gorgeous. Are you trying to kill us?
He heard when it hit the man who shot Nigel. He heard the man whimper and collapse to the ground and Adam wasn’t far behind. He fell to his knees, thinking about each action separately. Knees. Put the gun down. Point it away. Take a breath. Try to keep it together.
He crawled to Nigel, buried his face into his neck and sobbed. He felt an arm tighten around his waist and pull him in closer. “Let’s go home.”
Adam leaned into the touch but stopped when he realized Nigel was really talking to him. It wasn’t just a memory. “But - You’re shot. I thought you were dead.”
“I know, and it hurts like fuck, but we can’t stay here, can we, darling?”
Adam pulled away from him to see Nigel looking at him with his usual smirk, but the tightness around his eyes betrayed the pain he was in. He glanced over to the other man on the floor and added, “Plus, I think you killed that fucker over there. Time to go.”
Nigel struggled to get to his feet, wincing when Adam touched his shoulder. He motioned toward the gun. “Bring that.”
Adam shook his head as if to clear it. Focusing on Nigel and what he was saying. ”Why?”
“Evidence, but mostly I want to remember this moment every time I hold it. My avenging angel. When you screamed like that…” Nigel closed his eyes like he was savoring a good meal, “I think that’s what stopped me from bleeding to death, all the blood went to my cock.”
Adam was shaking apart. Tapping patterns on his leg trying to stay in the moment and not get swept away. “Kiss me,” Adam said, pointing to the spot behind his ear. Nigel blinked once but did as he was asked. A bit of the tension in Adam’s shoulders relaxed and he leaned into Nigel. Together they left as the sound of approaching sirens filled the space followed by red and blue lights.
