Free

Summary:

Hitch and Marlowe watch a seaside sunset together, finally free from the burden of being trapped within the Walls.

Notes:

And here it is, my last (late) story for HilowWeek 2022!
The prompt was "free". So I just wrote a simple fic about Hitch and Marlowe together after the titans were cleansed from outside the Walls, basking in their newfound freedom. I don't know if it's very good, but here it is anyway. I hope you enjoyed my stories!
If you have any advice or complaints, please tell me them! Thank you!

Work Text:

“It’s a beautiful sight, isn’t it?”

Marlowe smiled and hugged Hitch tight to his side. She smiled back, gazing into the setting sun with her boyfriend. For centuries, humanity struggled, fought, and died, all to achieve freedom. Out there, towards that fading horizon they stared at, lay the ocean, an immeasurable amount of salt water that seemed to go on forever. That was how they knew they’d made it, how they’d reached that illusive freedom.

“It really is,” Hitch replied, leaning into her companion’s warmth. It was nice, just taking in the scene, letting the cool air wash over them, carrying the faint smell of salt from the sea, while the sun’s warm rays painted them a faint orange. What made it more special, however, was that they could experience it together. So many people had met their end while striving to see what they now did. Despite all the odds, however, they’d survived, and now they could look towards their newfound freedom together.

“You know,” Marlowe began, “I never thought I’d see a view like this.” He looked down toward Hitch, a sweet smile on his face. “It’s beautiful, but even more so knowing that I can share it with you.”

“Come on, you don’t need to be so sappy,” Hitch joked with a smile. “Y’know, some people might say we won’t be free until we cross that sea out there, and deal with whatever challenge waits for us next,” she said, pointing towards the seemingly endless blue. “Well, I don’t give a damn what’s over there.” She let her hand fall to his leg, squeezing it fondly. “For me, being free just means being able to live without the constant fear of death, and to live… with you.”

“Now who’s being sappy?”

“Heeeey, come on! I pour my heart out and this is the response I get?”

“No, but this is,” he replied, before leaning down and kissing her on the lips. Her face flushed pink, and she kissed him back, sharing the passionate moment with him.

“Should we start heading back?” Hitch asked.

“Not yet,” Marlowe answered, “I want to watch the sunset with you a little longer.”

“Honestly… I was hoping you’d say that~”
