Can't Sleep (unless you're by my side)

Summary:

Gojo was awake. Again.

Notes:

Hello everyone! This is my first fic ever! I really want to get into writing as a hobby and I've decided to use these two as my practice hahaha! Apologies if anything is glaringly wrong. My only writing background is in academic papers, and I've always done astonishingly poorly with written creative works. I hope you can find some enjoyment though, I love these two and just want them to be happy.

Work Text:

Gojo was awake. Again.

Ever since childhood he had issues sleeping. There were only a handful of nights that he could remember going back to his high school days where he got a solid 8 hours of rest. He learned early on that the only way to bypass the extreme exhaustion that came with sleepless nights was to infinitely reverse his own cursed energy. Unfortunately, this meant that although he was not tired, he had far too many hours to reflect on his life.

This was until Nanami Kento reentered his life, and unintentionally changed it for the better.

After deciding the corporate world was nothing to kill yourself over, he returned and Gojo was once again reunited with his beloved kouhai. After Gojo dragged Nanami to a rather expensive restaurant (to Gojo’s insistence and Nanami’s secret delight), they made a short stop at the bar where Gojo insisted on taking a few shots with Nanami to celebrate, despite being well aware that he was a lightweight. With the night droning on and the bars coming to a close, a tipsy Gojo became very quiet, and this startled Nanami.

“Gojo-san, are you alright?” Nanami questioned the taller man.

“Perfectly fine Na-na-miiiiin~” Gojo replied in a sing-song voice, as he let his head hang, hoping Nanami wouldn’t notice just how red his cheeks were. He so badly just wanted to grab the man and confess how happy he was that Nanami had returned, how head over heels in love he is and had been since high school, and how scared Gojo was that Nanami would leave him again. He longed to envelop Nanami in a bear hug and never let go, so that he would always be safe.

“You’ve gone quiet. That’s unlike you. Will you be able to make it home?” the ex-salaryman leaned in, brushing the taller man’s bangs back from his forehead, only to have them fall forward again.

“I’ll be fine, don’t you worry your pretty little head about me” he smiled.

Nanami stood up, kissed his teeth, and shrugged his suit jacket back on before draping Gojo’s bomber jacket over his shoulders and grabbing his arm.

“Let’s go. I’m tired and don’t want to miss the last train.”

The ride was peaceful, and Gojo tried to focus on keeping his breathing even. Leave it to Nanami to be the perfect, strong, caring gentleman to sweep Gojo off his feet.

His apartment was clean and spacious, painted in calming neutral colors. Gojo noticed the distinct lack of warmth, however, that comes from having another body in the same space. The couch looked like it had never been sat on, the fridge lacked any sort of photos and grocery lists affixed to the front, and the plants seemed suspiciously fake. In all, the apartment seemed well kept but barely lived in.

“Bathroom is down the hall to the right. I’ll find you something to wear.”

Gojo dragged himself down the hall to the bathroom, where he had to take several moments to compose himself and not freak out. Here he was. In Nanami’s home! That fact made his heart race and his cheeks red. He didn’t quite imagine his first time in the younger man’s home would be like this (Gojo had hoped that it would be under more romantic and potentially steamy circumstances), but he was excited nonetheless.

After Nanami handed off a baggy pair of sweatpants and an old shirt to Gojo, he turned to the taller man.

“Do you want me to take the couch? I doubt you’ll fit” he yawned.

Gojo decided to take the opportunity to lean over and invade Nanami’s personal space once again.

“Nanamiiiiiii don’t be shy. We can share! I’ll keep my hands to myself, I promise!”

And that’s how the matter was settled. The two men decided to share the bed so that neither had to be cramped on the couch all night long.

And for the first time in years, Gojo found that sleep came to him without a fight. Initially he chalked it up to being even more tired than usual, with the alcohol catching up, but when he woke and found the blond man in his arms, he concluded it was because the man he had been in love with for years was peacefully sleeping in his arms. Not willing to part with him so soon, Gojo decided to indulge himself and just lie there with Nanami until the other woke. Not wanting to make the other annoyed with him so early in the morning, he pretended to remain asleep as he felt the younger man stir, and eventually pull away. Internally mourning the loss of warmth in his arms, he was once again thrown off by the soft hand that reached out and touched his hair, before traveling down to stroke his cheek.

“Good morning, Satoru” was said, barely above a whisper and then the weight left the bed and the door clicked, signaling that Nanami had left, and Gojo was alone.

(This led Gojo into a little bit of a panic. Why did Nanami stroke his face? Why did Nanami stroke his hair? Why did he whisper so sweetly to him? This has to mean Nanami felt something towards him, right?)

What Gojo didn’t know was that Nanami stood in his bathroom, face burning at the knowledge that he spent the night in the arms of the man he loved so dearly for all of these years. And it just so happened that that night he had some of the best sleep in his life.

After the men parted, Gojo vowed to experience that same warm feeling he had with Nanami again.

The second time it was a mission Nanami had been assigned to and one that Gojo insisted on joining him simply because the taller man had never gotten over his crush on the blonde and he’d be damned if he couldn’t make up excuses to spend time with him. After a tiresome day of Nanami fighting curses and Gojo being a general nuisance, they had dragged themselves back to their hotel room for a much needed rest. Except when they arrived in their room Nanami passively found the room he and Gojo would be staying in had a single bed.

(Gojo was not surprised, as he had specifically changed the reservation so that their luxury room with two king beds had been changed to a single king-sized bed.)

To Gojo’s delight, Nanami was too exhausted to even acknowledge the incorrect sleeping arrangements and instead opted to take the bathroom first without mentioning it. After a quick shower and a change of clothes, he left the bathroom and tossed himself onto the plush bed, letting out a relieved sigh. Gojo could do nothing more than chuckle softly as he left to take his own shower and change.

It wasn’t long before Gojo left the bathroom, turned out the lights and made himself comfortable in bed.

“Goodnight, Nanamin. Sleep well.”

It had been a few hours since the two went to bed, and he finally felt himself becoming drowsy. Gojo snuggled up to his pillow, when he felt the other man’s hand bump his shoulder. Turning over to face the man, he was met with the most angelic sight of his life. Nanami’s signature no nonsense scowl had been replaced by absolute peace. There was an absence of small lines indicating a furrowed brow, and no honeyed brown eyes staring in contempt. Nanami rested peacefully and quietly. But what stole Gojo’s attention was the hand that had reached out and touched Gojo’s shoulder, now laying dangerously close to Gojo. He had unintentionally knocked it off when he rolled over to look at the sleeping man. Feeling heat rise to his face he slowly moved his own hand to rest next to Nanamis’. The burn only intensified when Gojo held his breath and linked their pinkies together. Nanami made no movement, but Gojo squeezed his eyes shut and fought not to kick and squeal like a schoolgirl. He was so close! And their pinkies were linked! It was in the dark of the room where Gojo could pretend that he and Nanami were a loving couple and not two coworkers who just happened to be sharing a bed. And Gojo was fully ready to accept this and settle in for a long night of holding Nanami’s finger and coming up with elaborate romantic scenarios that involved a grand confession and loving kisses and the two men living in domestic bliss made all the more real by the warm body laying next to him. These daydreams, which preoccupied Gojo’s mind a lot of the time, were his favorite things to have played out in his head since he first met the blond in high school.

But before he could get immersed into his own fantasy, he decided to indulge himself one more time for the night. The white haired sorcerer moved closer to Nanami and carefully wrapped his free arm around the younger’s waist. Nanami unconsciously shifted closer and buried his face into the center of Gojo’s chest. His mind went silent. Not a single thought remained in Gojo’s mind, just the feeling of warm skin and soft hair tucked safely next to Gojo’s body. He savored the moment as he began to succumb to sleep.

The next morning he awoke to the absence of the blond man in his arms and to the sound of the shower running. Disappointed but not at all surprised, he sat up before stretching and getting ready to start his day, vowing not to mention it if Nanami didn’t.

(And just like the first time and to Gojo’s disappointment, he didn’t.)

Gojo sat up, disgruntled by the lack of a boyfriend in his bed. The two men had been dating now for almost a year, and always slept together when possible. So where is his handsome Nanami at this time of night?

As Gojo got up and left his room, the faint glow coming from the kitchen told him everything he needed to know.

Nanami, the man who despises overtime, also despises work left undone. As Gojo came to the end of the hall he smiled to himself as his suspicions were correct. Nanami had gotten out of bed and taken his laptop to the kitchen table where he was currently sitting while glaring at his screen and tapping away at his keyboard. He stood there for a moment waiting for Nanami to notice him and look up, however, the man was far too focused on the task at hand. It was only when Gojo stepped onto the tile of the kitchen did Nanami look up at the taller man.

“Hey, what’re you doing up?” The blond questioned, sitting up straight as his back popped.

“Imagine my surprise when I woke up only to find my personal teddy bear missing,” Gojo said with a fond smile reserved only for the younger sorcerer. “I couldn’t sleep.”

“Msorry. I just kept thinking about this report. I didn’t want to have to do it in the morning”

“I get it.” Gojo sighed before making his way over to Nanami, placing a soft kiss on his cheek and taking the seat next to him. “I’ll sit with you until you finish.”

“Love, you really don’t have to. I’ll be right in.”

“Mmhmm. Don’t worry about me. You’re the one that’s going to be grumpy tomorrow.” Gojo stuck his tongue out at his lover.

“Fine then, I’m almost done, promise.”

Nanami pressed his lips to Gojo’s cheek, earning a small noise of contentment, before turning back to his screen and continuing to tap away.

Gojo once again felt his eyes become heavy with the calm and safe aura Nanami carried with him. He placed his arms on the table and decided to rest his head on them, turned slightly so that he could watch his boyfriend. Eventually, even that became too much and he drifted off again.

What felt like only moments later, Nanami nudged him awake.

“Let’s go back to bed love. I won’t leave again, I promise.”

Gojo could do nothing more than smile as he watched his lover gather his laptop and reach out to take his hand.

Slowly standing up, he gave Nanami a lopsided smile.

“You’d better be telling the truth.”

And they walked, hand in hand, back to their room, Gojo headed straight for the bed and Nanami placed his laptop on their desk before getting under the covers. The taller sorcerer wasted no time pulling him closer until the blond was tucked safely under his chin.

“Goodnight sunshine. Dream of me.”

“As always. Goodnight my love.”
