On the Hunt for Legends

Summary:

Day 3 of trainwreck week

Volo is searching for the legendary dragons of Unova and gets more than what he bargained for.

Work Text:

It had taken the immortal a few decades to find, but he believed he had finally located one of the Tao dragons of Unova. Volo had taken an interest in studying the region after the other djinns related to Enamorous had found a home there.

He stepped into a large cave, trying to be as quiet as possible. Water dripped off the ceiling and onto the floor, a thick layer of moss muffled his steps. As he came to a section with a hole in the ceiling, rays of sunlight showered down on the massive sleeping form of Reshiram. The dragon was curled up on its side, its chest slowly rising and falling.

"A living legend..." Volo murmured.

Then Volo's eye was drawn to something odd. A coat rank with a white coat and hat on it. They looked incredibly familiar. Like a white version of Warden Ingo's tattered coat.

"....Wait." Volo said.

Reshiram stirred and Volo ran behind a rock. The massive dragon yawned and sat up. He smacked his lips a few times before shifting into a human form. One all too familiar. He looked identical to Ingo.

"Oh sweet Acreus, Ingo was Zekrom." Volo blurted out in shock.

Reshiram whipped his head around and charged at Volo's location. Volo didn't even had a chance to react as he was violently pinned to the floor of the cave.

"Who are you." Reshiram asked, smoke billowing out of the sides of his mouth.

Volo trembled, "I- um."

"If you lie I will know. I am Emmet. I am Reshiram. I will know if you lie." The dragon said, his eyes glowing bright blue.

"V-Volo. My name is Volo." Volo strutted.

"Why are you here, Volo?" Emmet asked again.

"I love studying myths and legends." Volo replied, gazing up into the fanged mouth of the man on top of him.

Emmet closed his mouth and hummed, making over Volo's words. "This is true."

Volo gave a sheepish smile only to have his throat grabbed by Emmet.

"But not the whole truth!" Emmet growled.

Volo flailed his legs, clawing at Emmet's hand. Reshiram's strength was well beyond his own, his hand cemented to his neck and unmoving. "I- I've met your brother!"

"Ingo!" Emmet gasped, letting go of Volo's throat.

Volo coughed, rubbing his bruised neck. Emmet dropped to his knees and sat in front of Volo, taking his hands.

"Tell me! Tell me where my brother is! Is he okay? Why did he go away? I miss him." Emmet said.

"He was sent back in time to Hisui and lost his memories. " Volo wheezed out.

Emmet blinked. "Sent back in time?"

Volo nodded. "Yes, he became a warden for the Pearl Clan and lived with them. I was exiled before I knew what happened next." Volo knew lying to the dragon was useless.

Emmet's grin was barely contained on his face. "Hisui. That means he is in Sinnoh! We must go!"

"We?" Volo asked.

Emmet stood and flames burst forth from his form. Once again the massive white dragon stood before Volo. "Yes, we. You shall lead me around Sinnoh. We will find Ingo."

"Its been hundreds of years!" Volo protested. "I have no idea if he is even alive!"

"He is alive. I can tell. You know Sinnoh better than I do. You are still not telling me everything. You are coming with me." Reshiram said.

Before Volo could make a rebuttal, the dragon had nipped onto the back of his pants and was hoisting him onto his back like a misbehaving kitten. Reshiram flapped his wings and the turbine on its tail began to glow. Volo was launched skyward as the dragon shot into the sky. He buried himself in Emmet's feather like fur, hanging on for dear life.

"Hold on tight! I do not wish to lose you!" Reshiram said.

Volo couldn't believe he was riding on the back of a legendary pokemon. He also couldn't believe he was heading to Sinnoh. He was extremely glad Reshiram had a turbine for a tail otherwise the flight would probably take much longer.

By the time they landed Volo was exhausted and fell off the dragon only to be caught in Emmet's arms as he changed back into a man.

"You are verrrry silly." Emmet said.

"I was hanging on for dear life!" Volo argued.

"True. Humans are fragile." Emmet noted, putting down Volo in a soft patch of grass. "I used to be very close to a pair of princes. I always was afraid we would break them."

"You are talking about when you were the origin dragon." Volo stated.

Emmet gave a nod, "Yes. And after too. When Ingo and I became three instead of one."

"Reshiram, Zekrom and Kyurem. Does Kyurem have a human Form too?" Volo asked.

"No. Not that I am aware of. Kyurem is... like the tape that held me and Ingo together." Emmet said.

"Do you miss being one?" Volo was starting to become thrilled that he was able to ask a legend questions this freely.

Emmet thought for a moment. "Yes and no. I actually really enjoy having Ingo be my brother. Its nice having someone to talk to, who is so similar yet different. But there is a hole I feel. I know I'm incomplete. I feel it more ever since he isn't with me anymore.

"I hope we find him then." Volo said.

Emmet grinned at Volo. "Yes! I will be so happy to see my brother."

"Just remember he won't know who you are." Volo said.

Emmet gave a smirk. "Ingo will know me. He is part of me. Even separated we are one. A two cart train!"

Volo did not understand the sudden train analogy but set that aside. He closed his eyes for just a moment and quickly passed out.

He woke up the next morning buried in furr. Volo wiggled around, looking for an exit to his fluff cocoon. He poked his head out to find Reshiram had curled protectively around him in the night. Next to him stood a basket full of berries. The sight was enough for Volo to realize he was absolutely starving. He picked up a berry and began to eat. Reshiram yawns and transformed back into Emmet.

"Good morning! Glad to see you are eating. You had gone many hours without food." Emmet said. "I hoped you would enjoy those."

"Well its the least you could do after kidnapping me." Volo smirked, taking another bite out of a pecha berry.

Emmet laughed, sitting across from him and began to eat as well. "So, tell me about my brother's time in Hisui. It might give us some clues."

"He was a Warden on Mt. Coronet. He served Lady Sneasler." Volo said, licking some berry juice from his lips.

"Sneasler... those died out a long time ago. We only have the black ones now." Emmet said.

Volo nodded. "I don't know if your brother would move on after his clan and pokemon died."

Emmet scratched his chin, "My brother is an idealist. He would try to make the best of the situation." Emmet's eyes snapped up to stare at Volo, "Did Lady Sneasler have a cave?"

"I believe so." Volo said.

Emmet grinned, "Then we shall search for it."

"Emmet, it could be anywhere on this whole mountain." Volo's voice dripped with fear. Even if they both were immortal Volo did not like the idea of searching the entirety of Mt. Coronet for an old Sneasler den.

"I will sense my brother as we get close to him. Don't worry." Emmet explained.

Volo grumbled, taking the last berry, unsure if to trust the dragon. He then reminded himself this was the dragon of truth so at least he knew Emmet wasn't faking his confidence.

Emmet switched back into Reshiram and gently picked up Volo to put him on his back. Volo sank back into Reshiram's fur, he snuggled into him, making him feel very warm. They started their long trek around the mountain.

"Oh look! Right here used to be some ruins of the Celestia people. They eroded away with time but we are close to where the hallow used to be." Volo said, pointing at a large flat area.

"Was the hallow important to my brother?" Emmet asked.

"Yes, he was friends with another warden here." Volo said.

Emmet grinned, "Excellent. Let's keep looking. Volo, you know a lot about ruins, don't you?"

"Studying them is my hobby. Whenever I get upset I think about myths and legends. Drown myself in their wonder and try to understand them." Volo said, his fingers gently scratching the base of Reshiram's neck absent-mindedly.

"...Do you get upset often?" Emmet asked.

Volo paused and then chuckled softly to himself. "Yes... I do."

Reshiram hummed softly to himself in thought but then came to a sudden stop. "I feel him."

"You do!?" Volo exclaimed.

"I do! He is here!" Emmet flew into the direction his feelings were guiding him. They came to a small half buried cave. Reshiram started digging, Volo jumping off to help. When there was a hole just big enough to fit the two men, Reshiram switched to Emmet and they both climbed inside.

The cave was similar to Emmet's back in Unova. Moss covered the floor and soft drips of water echoed. They dove in deeper until they found him, Zekrom, laying on the floor in a deep sleep.

"Brother." Emmet sobbed, tears welling up in his eyes at the sight of Ingo.

He switched to his dragon form again and gently nuzzled Zekrom. Zekrom blinked a few times and looked up at Reshiram.

"Big brother, its me." Reshiram said.

"...E...Emmet?" Zekrom asked.

Reshiram grinned and nuzzled into his brother, "I knew you would remember me!"

Zekrom hugged Reshiram tightly, "I laid down for a little nap. How long was I out?"

"Hundreds of years!" Reshiram laughed.

"Oh! That was not a little nap." Zekrom said, embarrassement clear in his voice.

Volo hung back and watched the reunion. A small smile came to his face before quickly leaving. He knew Ingo would recognize him so it was time to leave. He quietly turned and left the cave, letting the brothers be happy together.

"Hmm, well I'm in Sinnoh anyway, maybe I can find a good potato mochi pla-" Volo didn't finish his thought as Emmet grabbed him into a tight hug from behind.

"Where are you going?" Emmet asked.

Volo's face flushed with anxiety, "Away. You don't need me anymore you found Ingo."

Emmet kissed Volo's cheek, "Yes but I never got to thank you for your help."

"Trust me I... I didn't really do anything." Volo looked away, unable to meet Emmet's eyes.

"Its okay Volo, you don't need to run away. I'm not mad at you." Ingo said, coming out of the cave.

Volo bit his lip, looking back at Ingo. His eyes had turned red instead of their usual white. "I think I do..." Volo said, voice low and hushed.

"Is this because of what you did?" Emmet asked.

Volo stiffened, "You already know?"

"Ingo told me briefly in the cave." Emmet then explained shortly.

Fear clenched Volo's heart, there was no use lying to the legendary no matter how much he wanted to, "Yes, I'm afraid you will hurt me once you know the truth."

Emmet rested his chin on Volo's shoulder. Volo held his breath, unsure of what the dragon was thinking. Emmet moved slowly to Volo's neck and gave him a small nip, just enough to make Volo wince.

"There, you have been punished. Now, no more running away." Emmet stated.

Volo looked down at Emmet in confusion, the dragon's bright blue eyes locked onto him. "Why do you want me around?"

Emmet's hug around Volo's middle tightened, "I like you. And you are sad. You get upset easy. But you like legends. Ingo and I are legends. You can be happy for a while. Stay with me and Ingo. Just for a few stops."

Volo looked at Ingo who returned a small cat like smile. He had already approved his brother's wish. Volo returned to look at Emmet, intense blue eyes still fixed on him. "Okay... I'll stay."

Emmet's grin filled his face and he gave Volo another kiss on the cheek. "Wonderful! Let's fly home!"

Volo wasn't looking forward to another long flight but he guessed he wouldn't mind if it was with Emmet.
