Chapter Text

Sweat was shining on her body and soaking through her clothes. Her hands were fisting the soft sheets underneath her, pulling hard. Her eyes were closed and her teeth were tucked into her bottom lip, biting it in the best way.

“Yes, fuck,” She whispered, her fingers tugging harder at the sheets, “Oh, god, Arizona.”

Her whispers faded out and she turned onto her side, tucked her arm underneath her pillow and continued to enjoy her slumber.

But, unfortunately, a certain someone was awake beside her. And heard the whole thing.

x

Owen was acting weird today and she didn’t know why. They had both gotten up, showered and carpooled to work but he was so quiet. He barely said a word to her — he only spoke when he was being spoken to. Amelia worried his PTSD was affecting him again and she figured it would be best to give him space for the day and then reconnect later.

That was until she realized he was directing it towards her and not anyone else. She wanted to shrug it off, it’s common for people to take their frustration out on their partners, she knew that. But it seemed more intense than it usually would be. And, after all, she wanted to help and understand what was bothering her boyfriend.

So she found him in the attending’s lounge by himself, pouring himself some coffee. He looked over his shoulder with bright eyes but as soon as he saw it was her, his face hardened and he turned back to his coffee.

“Um. Hey.” She stood by the door, feeling small, “How’s your day been?” She asked.

“Fine,” He answered. When he turned around to face her, he didn’t seem to make eye contact with her, instead his arms folded across his chest and looked elsewhere.

“Are you okay?” She walked towards him but he seemed to shift uncomfortably at the gesture so she stopped in her tracks, “What’s going on, Owen?”

“I don’t know, you tell me,” His voice was sharp when he finally looked at her.

Her brow furrowed and she looked at him confusedly, “Well, I can tell you’re mad at me…”

He rolled his eyes, “Oh come on, Amelia. You know exactly what you did.”

“I—“ Her eyes widened, not believing what she was hearing, “I don’t, actually.”

“Sure,” He laughed angrily, “You might as well just tell me. I already know. You keeping it from me is making it worse.”

She shook her head, trying to wrack her brain of all the possible things she could’ve done that Owen would be upset over. Her mind went blank.

“I’ve done a lot of things in my life that I’m not proud of, I’ll be the first to admit that. But Owen. I swear, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

He looked even more angry now, standing up straight and shaking his head. His eyes were darting around the room rapidly and she’d never really seen him like this before. It scared her, sure but, more than anything, she was worried about him.

“Owen. Hey, look at me,” She stepped closer to him and took out her penlight. She turned it on and shined it in his eyes, “Follow the light for me.”

He swatted the penlight out of her hand and it landed on the floor with a clatter. She gasped softly and picked it up, luckily it was unscathed, “My brain is fine, Amelia. It’s you that isn’t!”

“Wha—? Owen, please just tell me what’s happening.” She pleaded with him as tears sprung to her eyes.

“Goddamnit, Amelia! I know you’ve been having an affair!” He yelled. And it wasn’t a yell Amelia had ever heard before. It was way louder than she imagined her boyfriend could ever get.

She jumped slightly and backed away from him, “What? I—I’m not, I swear.”

“Bullshit!” He yelled back.

She stared at him for a few seconds before the door swung open behind her.

“Hey! What the hell is going on in here?” Arizona entered and she placed herself in between the couple, her right arm coming out to shield Amelia as she stared at Owen.

The redhead started laughing. But it wasn’t an amused laugh, it was an angry laugh. He turned, pinching the bridge of his nose, “Wow, Robbins. This is just perfect.”

Amelia wondered what he meant by that.

“I could hear you from all the way down the hall, Hunt. We don’t need you disturbing the patients. Find somewhere else to fight.”

“No, no this is actually good that you’re here. Now you can both explain what’s been going on,” He folded his arms across his chest and leaned on the counter.

Both Arizona and Amelia were confused but the blonde just threw her hands up, “Ya know what? I don’t even know what you’re talking about but, I don’t care. Just go somewhere else if you’re gonna fight,” Arizona turned to look at Amelia as if she was speaking to her too.

The brunette nodded and gulped feeling like a child who’s just been scolded by an adult. Arizona turned to leave but Owen was quick to speak up, “Doctor Robbins, can I ask you something?”

Owen’s jaw was clenched, still just as mad as before or maybe even more mad now. Amelia didn’t understand this — she couldn’t understand why her boyfriend was being this way.

Arizona turned back around, confused but nonetheless, she nodded, “Make it quick.”

“Why did my girlfriend say your name in her sleep last night?”

Amelia’s face dropped and she could feel the blood rushing to her face and neck, coloring them a deep crimson. She was absolutely mortified as she remembered her sex dream and even more embarrassed that not only did Owen hear her, but that Arizona knows now too.

“Um…” She looked at Amelia with a furrowed brow, “I don’t know, she was probably dreaming. We work together a lot so…I was probably just in her dream or something.”

Okay, maybe Arizona hasn’t caught on yet. This is good.

Owen laughs angrily, “I’d say you were more than just in her dream.”

“Owen, can you just get to the point? I’m slammed right now, I don’t see how this has you freaking out.” Arizona looked frustrated, ready to leave, her hand on the doorknob.

“You wanna explain to her, Amelia or do I have to?”

No.

Amelia stepped forward, holding out a finger, pointing at him. She felt the anger and the tears pile up inside her, “Don’t.” Her hand shook. She’s sure she would die of embarrassment if he told Arizona about the context of her dream. It wasn’t for her to know — it wasn’t for anyone to know.

He just smiled a devilish smile and looked back at Arizona, “Are you fucking my girlfriend?”

Arizona’s jaw dropped as she heard those words fall from Owen’s mouth, “Uh, I’m sorry, what?” She blinked and looked back and forth between Owen and Amelia, utterly dumbfounded, “No, no! Of course not! What?” She had a grimace on her face and Amelia tried not to overthink that, “How does me being in Amelia’s dream make you think that we’re sleeping togeth—Oh.” Arizona must’ve realized as she was speaking what this whole situation was about. She swallowed and stepped back. She looked at Amelia curiously and then back at Owen, “Listen, Owen, I swear. I’d never do that to you.”

Owen tutted and rolled his eyes, “Oh please. You did it to your own wife.”

“Hey! No, you don’t get to throw that in my face!” Arizona was angry now, walking towards him, almost sizing him up, “I didn’t sleep with your girlfriend, Hunt. Who, by the way, has a name,” Arizona said, her voice stern and almost raised, “Nor have I ever slept with her. We barely even talk! So get off your high horse and leave me the hell out of this!”

With that, Arizona stormed away and slammed the door. The whole time she was in there, Amelia was practically silent but she’s done being silent, she’s done giving Owen the benefit of the doubt.

“I can’t believe you’d embarrass me like that in front of our colleague! What the hell is wrong with you?!”

“Me?! You’re the one having a fucking sex dream about her!”

“That doesn’t mean anything! You are who I’m with,” Amelia walked closer to him, her eyes were watering and her heart was aching.

“No,” Owen shook his head and took his mug off the counter, “Not anymore.” He started to walk towards the door but Amelia was quick to follow him.

“Wait, Owen, please,” Amelia pleaded. She couldn’t believe he would walk away from her right now. She couldn’t believe he’d end it just like that.

Luckily, he turned around before he could get to the door and put his hand on his hip and looked into her eyes, “So why did you have a sex dream about her?”

“I—I don’t know! Stuff like that…just happens. What, you’re telling me that you’ve never had a sex dream about someone else?”

“I’ve only ever had a sex dream that had you in it or some celebrity in it. But you had one about Arizona! One of our mutual friends — someone we work with everyday. And you expect me to believe nothing is going on?”

“Yes!” She didn’t know why that was such a hard ask. She didn’t understand his logic at all, “I expect you to fucking trust me when I tell you that nothing has ever happened between her and I. I’m not a cheater, Owen. You know me.”

He seemed to relax a little bit, his jaw unclenched. But he still had 90% of his guard up, Amelia could tell. However, she was confident she could reassure him enough that he’d drop this — that he’d believe her (since it was the honest truth).

“Nothing has ever happened?” He asked, an eyebrow quirked up.

“Nothing.”

“And you don’t have feelings for her?”

“Nope.”

“And you’ve never had any…sexual fantasies about her?”

“Well—“

Owen’s face changed — immediately going back to extreme anger, “Wow. Fuck you.” His voice was low as he left the room, slamming the door behind him.

She was quick to open it, “Wait, Owen! You didn’t let me finish! Come back here!” She tried to run after him but the fact was, his legs were much longer and he was much faster.

And she knew him, he was inconsolable right now. He wouldn’t believe anything she had to say. He’d keep swearing at her and making her feel guilty over something she had absolutely zero control over.

So she let him go.

And she was beyond fucking pissed.

x

It wasn’t until she was outside after her shift that she realized that Owen had probably already left. Which meant that his car wasn’t going to be here. Which also meant she had no ride.

She huffed and looked up at the sky — she could see her breath in the cool winter air floating up towards the stars.

She never properly looks at the stars in the sky. But she wished she did because they looked so bright and beautiful tonight. She was entranced.

Until a soft voice was heard from behind her.

“Star gazing, Shepherd?”

She snapped out of it and turned her head: Arizona. Of course it was her. One of the two people she really didn’t want to see. The embarrassment from earlier hadn’t worn off in the slightest and she was hoping she could just avoid Arizona for the next couple of weeks until they both forgot.

But maybe she could just attempt to put a calm face on and pretend nothing ever happened just a few hours prior.

“Yeah. They’re really bright tonight,” She looked back up and saw from her peripheral that Arizona stood beside her and looked up too.

“Hm. It’s a rarity that Seattle has no clouds in sight,” Arizona said, admiring the sky just as much as Amelia was, “What’s your favorite?”

“What?”

“What’s your favorite constellation?”

“Oh,” Amelia focused her eyes back up to the sky, “Probably the big dipper.”

Arizona giggled beside her, “Is that because that’s the only one you know of?”

“No, of course not,” Amelia replied, a soft smile on her face.

“Do you know any other ones besides the little dipper?”

Amelia was silent for a second, “I plead the fifth.”

Arizona laughed and rolled her eyes, “Mine’s Orion. Have you heard of it?”

“Yeah, I think so.”

“It kinda looks like a lava lamp. Or a hot air balloon. Or like a drawing of a goldfish a kid would draw but like…the head facing up.”

Amelia laughed at that and looked at the blonde beside her who smiled back at her.

“Can you see it?” Arizona asked and Amelia looked back up, searching for a lava lamp or a hot air balloon or a goldfish drawn by a child.

“Um…”

She kept searching but she had no luck.

Suddenly, she felt a firm hand on her waist and Arizona stood behind her. Her other hand took Amelia’s and her head was leaning on her shoulder, “Point your finger.” The blonde instructed and Amelia did as she was told. Arizona guided her hand up towards the stars and pointed to three stars in a line, “This…is Orion’s belt. You see the three in a row?”

“Mhmm,” She could hardly speak, the warmth of the other woman was Amelia’s main focus.

“And then up…and over,” Arizona led her finger, tracing the outline of Orion, “There. You see it now? Kinda like a lava lamp, huh?”

Amelia did see it now and she smiled and nodded, “Yeah, kinda.”

Arizona let go of her hand and went back to her place beside Amelia, the warmth disappearing immediately. And the brunette wished it didn’t.

“You waiting on your fiery angry redhead?” Arizona joked.

But it was hard for Amelia to laugh, she was still so angry at him and what he did earlier.

“He’s not mine anymore,” she explained.

Arizona raised her eyebrows, “You…broke up with him?”

“Nope. He broke up with me," she admitted.

“Because of earlier?”

“Yup.”

Wow. That’s so stupid.”

“Right?!” Amelia agreed, “He’s a fucking asshole.”

The blonde nodded beside her but then sighed, “I’m sorry, that’s rough. Are you okay?”

“I’m pissed off,” Amelia admitted.

“You’re the calmest pissed off person I’ve ever seen,” Arizona chuckled, “I must have a huge temper…Did you see how mad I got when he was simply just…being loud?”

Amelia laughed, “Yeah but it’s valid. He…he was screaming at me and he just…he’s never done that before,” Her laugh turned into tears gathering in her eyes when she thought about how awful he was being.

“You didn’t deserve that.”

Amelia nodded and looked at the ground. She knew Arizona was right and she knew it wasn’t her fault but she still felt a little bit guilty for the entire situation.

“So…are you waiting for someone else then?”

“Um no, actually. Owen and I carpooled to work today and he already left so I was just gonna call a taxi or something but then I got distracted by the stars.”

“Yeah, stars are like that,” Arizona smiled softly, “Do you need a ride?”

“No, no, it’s fine, I’ll just get a taxi.”

“Come on, Amelia, a taxi is gonna be a fortune. Especially on a Saturday night.”

“But I don’t want to burden you.”

“Oh please, just…come on,” Arizona rolled her eyes and walked towards her car.

Amelia smiled softly and followed her.

As soon as she buckled her seatbelt and Arizona started the car, the blonde turned to her with a smirk on her face, “So…you had a sex dream about me, huh?”

Amelia almost choked and her face turned as red as a tomato as she stared into Arizona’s eyes.

Arizona laughed, “Relax. It’s fine. If anything, I’m honored,” She turned back and kept her eyes on the road as she drove. The brunette was silent still, unable to speak, “How was I? Was I at least good?” A soft smile was on Arizona’s face but it wasn’t a malicious smile, she just seemed amused.

“Y-Yeah,” She cleared her throat and looked out the window, in an attempt to hide her red face, “You were.”

“Good,” Arizona said proudly, “I’m sorry again, by the way. I didn’t mean to make the situation worse earlier…I definitely made him more angry by being there.”

“No, don’t apologize. I hated the way he was speaking to me anyway. I can’t believe I nearly begged for his forgiveness.”

“Well, you love him.”

Amelia felt the anger soar through her again. It had been hitting her in waves all day but this wave was bigger than ever. She couldn’t believe she almost begged him. She couldn’t believe she let him walk all over her and yell at her like that. She couldn’t believe he didn’t fucking trust her. She felt her heart speed up and her face reddened even more, “I hate him.” Her teeth were clenched and her fists were balled up.

Arizona looked surprised at the statement but she just swallowed and nodded, “Okay.”

“He doesn’t get to yell at me like that. He doesn’t get to embarrass me like that at my workplace and get away with it,” Amelia seethed, “Do you know, all throughout my shift, I got stares from nurses and doctors that I don’t even know? People who looked up to me now think I’m cheating on my boyfriend because they heard his screams. And apparently the news spread like wildfire around the hospital.”

“Gossip sucks,” Arizona agreed quietly.

“Now everyone thinks I’m some whore,” Her eyes darted around, and her heart pounded so hard in her chest that she could feel it in her face. She hadn’t been this mad in a very long time. And she wanted revenge — no, she needed revenge, “Pull over.”

They were on the highway going quite fast so Arizona looked over at her with concern, “Are you okay?”

“Just pull over!” Amelia said with more sternness in her voice.

The blonde did as she was told, pulling over to the side of the road and parking the car. She looked at Amelia, searching for some answers but Amelia didn’t say a word. Instead, she unbuckled her seatbelt and surged forward, pressing her lips to Arizona’s and unbuckling Arizona’s seatbelt for her.

The blonde kissed her back for a few seconds but then put a hand on Amelia’s chest pushing her back slightly, “Amelia, wait. What are you doing?”

If the whole hospital thought she was fucking Arizona, she might as well do it, right?

“Getting revenge.”

She could feel Arizona’s hot breath against her face as she breathed heavily. It seemed as if she was considering it and Amelia wasn’t sure she’d oblige but after a few seconds, the blonde’s arm wrapped around Amelia’s waist, pulling her into her lap as she nodded, “Okay.”

Amelia smiled as she settled into Arizona’s lap, straddling her and taking her face in her hands. She leaned forward slower this time and took her time to kiss Arizona softly. Arizona tightened her grip on Amelia’s hips and kissed her back.

It felt different. But amazing. She was so used to the rough big hands that usually clasped around her waist and the itchy stubble that Owen had on his jaw. But Arizona was so damn soft — she was so damn addicting.

Amelia traced Arizona’s bottom lip with her tongue and the blonde quickly opened her mouth and allowed their tongues to brush against each other.

Everything was soft.

She felt the arousal bubble up in her stomach and she needed more. She bit softly at Arizona’s lip and kissed her more passionately. Her hands threaded through golden tresses and she pulled softly. Arizona pulled her closer, no space between their bodies now.

A soft moan escaped Arizona’s throat and Amelia’s insides jumped, butterflies filling her stomach. The blonde seemed just as into it as Amelia was and that fact alone made Amelia go crazy.

But what made Amelia go really crazy was when Arizona pulled away and tucked her head into Amelia’s neck, ran her tongue over it and sucked on her pulse point. Amelia tipped her head back and closed her eyes as she felt Arizona’s fingertips dig into her back. The brunette moaned and whined — she was so turned on already.

Arizona bit softly at her neck and then pulled away. She was out of breath and looking at Amelia with more hunger in her eyes than Amelia had ever seen.

“I want to…” Arizona’s eyes turned soft and her hands became more gentle around Amelia’s waist, “But I don’t want this to be something you’re doing just to get back at Owen. I don’t want you to regret it.”

Arizona’s so damn sweet. And it made Amelia want her so much more.

“I won’t regret it,” Amelia meant what she said. She couldn’t imagine herself ever regretting being touched by Arizona.

"Amelia…He broke up with you on a whim just hours ago. He'll come around. You've been together for a long time and–"

"After how he spoke to me, I don't care if he begs, I'm not going back."

"Maybe not. But I'm not taking that risk, and I never want to take advantage of anyone. Especially someone who was freshly broken up with," Arizona shook her head. Amelia couldn't help the disappointed look on her face but the blonde reached up, cupping her cheek, "I'm sorry. I should've stopped you before."

"It's alright, I get it," Amelia climbed off of Arizona's lap and back into the passenger seat. She straightened herself out, fixing her hair and her top which had ridden up slightly. She felt eyes on her so she looked to her left to find Arizona staring at her like she wanted her – she looked hungry and the thought made Amelia's stomach flutter, "You okay there, Robbins?"

"Mhm yeah, yup. Fine." Arizona put the car in drive and focused her eyes ahead of her.

They drove in silence for a few minutes, Amelia just watching the trees pass by. But Arizona broke the silence suddenly.

“Um. Where am I dropping you off, by the way?”

Oh.

Right.

She couldn’t exactly go home, Owen would be there.

“Uh…I guess…I guess I don’t know,” Amelia sighed, “I could call Mer,” She said as she took out her phone.

“You can…you can sleep at my house,” Arizona said, her eyes still facing forward, not daring to look Amelia’s way, “I’ve got a spare bedroom.”

The brunette considered it. She didn’t really want to face her sisters and explain everything — well no, they probably already heard the rumors. Which, honestly, is even worse than having to explain herself, “Okay. Yeah, thanks.”

When they get to Arizona's house, the blonde showed Amelia to the guest room, "You can borrow one of my t-shirts to wear to bed if you want."

"Oh. Thanks, but I sleep naked," Amelia said. Her eyes widened when she realized what she said, "I mean not like…not completely naked, I still wear underwear, don't worry! I just mean—“

Arizona laughed and patted Amelia on the shoulder, clearly amused, "Relax, it's fine. I don't mind."

Amelia felt her cheeks flush red of embarrassment while Arizona beamed back at her before winking teasingly.

“Well, if you need anything I’m just next door. Help yourself to anything in the kitchen.”

“Okay, thanks,” Amelia replied, her cheeks still slightly red.

When Arizona left the room, Amelia groaned. She wondered how many times in the space of twelve hours she could possibly embarrass herself with Arizona. Well, granted, the first time was Owen’s big ass mouth, not her own (for once). But still, she felt like some awkward teenager, saying all the wrong things.

She plopped down on the bed, covering her eyes with her arm. She thought about how she practically attacked Arizona with kisses randomly on the side of the road. How Arizona knew she dreamt about sleeping with her. How she could hardly breathe when Arizona was showing her the constellations in the parking lot. How badly she stumbled over her words just moments ago.

God, she felt like an idiot.

Maybe Arizona was right. Owen did break up with her on a complete whim; there was no doubt he’d be begging for her back. She kissed Arizona to get revenge. But as soon as her lips touched the blonde’s she practically forgot what she was doing and why she was doing it — she simply fell into it and didn’t want to stop. No, she couldn’t stop.

And she wanted to kiss her again. And again. And again.

She won’t go back to Owen, of course she won’t. She doesn’t care how sorry he might be. She couldn’t take him back, not after his outburst earlier that echoed throughout the entire hospital.

Part of her wished he had let her finish her sentence. The sentence where she was about to explain that yes, she did fantasize about Arizona but that was years ago, before she really knew Owen at all. And she hadn’t thought about Arizona in that way since.

But most of her doesn’t care that he didn’t let her finish, in fact, she’s a little glad that he walked away first because otherwise, she probably would’ve come to her senses eventually and been the one to dump him. It was easier this way.

A soft vibration in her jean pocket brought her back to reality. She took a deep breath, wondering if it was Owen already texting her to come back. She found herself relieved when she saw it wasn't.

Arizona: I forgot to say goodnight…

The three dots above the keyboard popped up and soon enough, another text came through.

Arizona: Goodnight! 😴💤

A soft smile spread across her lips.

Amelia: Goodnight ☺️

Sleep found her soon after.
