Work Text:
Sally walked in the store, the cold rush of AC a welcome changed from the sweltering heat outside. She was here on a mission, and nothing was going to get in her way. Sally headed straight towards the kids toys. It was her nephew's birthday tomorrow and she always excelled at present’s. The thing he wanted most this year was a Rubik’s Cube. Did that seem a little… Simple to Sally? Most definitely. Who wanted only a Rubik’s Cube for their birthday? Her nephew apparently. It was definitely interesting. But whatever he wanted, he got. And Sally got something out of it too. An adrenaline rush. She had a tradition of stealing whatever birthday present her nephew wanted. In the past, it’d been complicated when he wanted something big or expensive. They were more protected. But a Rubik’s Cube? A piece of cake. Cheap and small, no one would care. Could she afford to buy a Rubik’s Cube? Yeah. But stealing was more fun. In the kids toys, Sally looked around for the Rubik’s Cubes. She grabbed two in one hand, then dropped one and made it seem like an accident. She bent down and shoved one of the Rubik’s Cubes in a pocket on the inside of her jacket and then stood up and put the other one back. There, cameras have a hard time telling when you pick up multiple things and now that she had put one away, it didn’t look like she had anything. All the camera had seen was her picking up a Rubik’s Cube, dropping it, and then putting it back. She was all good to go.
Sally sat at her desk, thinking. How should she go about getting a Rubik’s Cube for her nephew? She would obviously steal it. It was tradition at this point. But a Rubik’s Cube was just so easy. She thought about the conversation she had had with her nephew.
“What do you want for your birthday Leo?”
“I really want a Rubik’s Cube Auntie Sally!”
“Really? Just a Rubik’s Cube? Nothing else? That’s pretty simple.”
“Yes! They’re so cool! That's all I want!”
“Alright Leo. Whatever you want, Auntie Sally will get it!” She didn’t even really need to plan. It wasn’t like it was some complicated heist. And she had stolen more complicated things before. This wasn’t like the year he wanted some huge lego set that she definitely could not stuff in her jacket. No, this was easy. All the planning she needed was making sure she came on a busy day, so no one paid too much attention to her.
Sally actually couldn’t believe it. How had she gotten caught over a fucking Rubik’s Cube? After everything she had stolen over the years, a Rubik’s Cube was what got her caught? As she had been walking out of the store, her jacket pocket ripped and the Rubik’s Cube popped out. It popped out right in front of an employee. Sally heard the rip, looked down, and watched it pop out. Then she looked up and made eye contact with an employee. Now, here she was, sitting in a backroom waiting for a higher up to come in so this situation could be resolved. She could not believe that she had gotten caught over a Rubik’s Cube.
