Work Text:
Shadow follows Sonic wherever he goes.
Sure, it's a rivalry thing—on the surface. But it's more than that now.
Much more.
At this point, it's become second nature. Every mission, every detour, every sudden crisis—they just happen to end up in the same place.
Coincidence? Maybe. But it also makes it easier for Shadow to keep an eye on him, even if he never directly gets involved in the incident.
He knows Sonic can handle himself. But if there ever came a day he couldn't... if something happened and Shadow wasn't there—
He wouldn't forgive himself. Not again.
Sonic never really says anything about it, but he can always feel it. The quiet presence at his back, just out of sight. It's comforting in a way he's never admitted.
Amy follows him too, here and there, sure. But this is different.
"I'm glad you're here," Sonic says softly. Not to anyone in particular. Just to the wind. Loud enough for Shadow to hear, but vague enough not to make it a thing.
Shadow's steps falter just slightly. His cheeks begin to warm up as Sonic readies for the next mission.
And, as always, Shadow is right behind him.
