It was quiet. Too quiet.
No longer were there soft pads trotting through the studio apartment they shared. No more finding black fur all over the place. Remus had to say goodbye to his best friend, while the aftermath tore him to shreds.
Breaking from his routine was hard. An extra bowl that he made for years suddenly useless. For a week after he still made it and sat it on the floor. Maybe he was still hungry, wherever he was.
It’s been over a month and he still calls for Pads to come running. Once he even caught himself buying a pack of treats for him. Putting it back on the shelf broke his heart further. Tears came to life in his eyes, causing a stinging sensation. His throat burned like acid from his stomach was coming up. But that wasn't true. Using so many muscles to hold back a sob was painful.
Day by day it gets "easier". It's learning to tolerate it. Day by day Remus has to learn to because comfortable with this new silence.
