Chapter 1: Toast and Cold Fruit
Summary:
The Noceda children make their mother breakfast.
They do a truly awful job but it's the thought that counts.
Chapter Text
Camila loves her kids.
She loves Luz when she's getting called into Hexside because of something the girl has done.
She loves Vee when she falls asleep on her during a movie night and leaves her trapped for hours.
She loves Hunter when she has to stay up until the early hours of the morning, soothing him after a particularly bad nightmare.
And she loves her kids, when she wakes up in the mornig to find the three of them and the kitchen covered in just about every substance known to man.
It was sweet really.
There had been no occasion, nothing special about the day.
They had all just spontaneously decided to make her breakfast.
So, did it really matter that there was pancake batter on the walls?
"I'm really sorry Mamá."
Camila smiles at Luz, as she wipes milk off the counter.
"Don't worry Mijá, I appreciate the gesture."
Hunter stashes the mop back in the closet, with a heavy sigh.
"I think that's the last of it."
Camila chuckles lightly at the sight of him as she tosses a dirty rag in the laundry basket.
"Querido, you have flour in your hair."
Hunter blinks dumbly for a minute before turning bright red and attempting to dust the flour out of his hair.
Vee butters a few slices of toast, arranging them on a plate at the table, alonside a bowl of fruit.
"There! Breakfast. Sorry we couldn't make you pancakes like we planned."
Camila shakes her head and reaches for a slice of toast as the four go to sit at the table.
"Don't be, pancakes or toast, it's all the same to me. This was so sweet of you mis bebes. Thank you."
Chapter 2: Not guilty
Summary:
Camila returns from the unfortunate task of jury duty.
She is unhappy with the conclusion.
Chapter Text
Camila grips the steering wheel like it hs personally offended her, the words from an hour or so earlier ring in her head.
Not guilty.
Not guilty.
Not guilty.
The jury had been quite evenly split, and she'd been so sure of which way it would go.
Not guilty.
Not guilty.
Not guilty.
How was the accounts of multiple witnesses not enough to convict the man for the abuse those poor children had been through?
Not guilty.
Not guilty.
Not guilty.
She's sure he did it.
Not guilty.
Not guilty.
Not guilty.
She could see it, the quiet contempt in his eyes.
Not guilty.
Not guilty.
Not guilty.
That man is poison and he's walking free.
She slams her foot on the brake, pulling slowly up to park next to the house.
The car door is harshly slammed shut behind her as she slings her bag over her shoulder, stomping up the stairs.
It takes less then ten minutes to change out of her court dress and into leggings and an oversized t-shirt of Manny's, collapsing onto the sofa, weighed down by anger and exhaustion.
"¿Mamá?"
She glances up to find Hunter hovering in the doorway, and she feels herself soften instantly.
"Hi, mijó."
She moves her arm to rest over the back of the sofa, a silent invitation which Hunter quickly accepts.
Hunter settles beside her and tucks his legs under him, resting his head on her shoulder.
"Are... you okay?"
Camila lets a heavy sigh rattle out of her, as she puts an arm around her boy.
"I'm fine, cariño, I'm sorry if I seem tense I just..."
"Jury duty didn't go so well?"
She bites her lip, trying to decide how much to tell him, before she speaks again.
"No. A man was found innocent of... of something I wholly believe he did. Some he should be in prison for. For a very long time."
Hunter nods as he lets himself process the words.
"And that's why you're upset?"
Camila smiles softly at the boy, and gently twirls a strand of blonde hair around her finger.
"I'm just... I'm tired of powerful people hurting others and getting away with it."
Hunter frowns, knowing all too well what (or rather who) she is referring to.
Camila yawns and drags a blanket over them both.
"Now. I am not going to move, for some time."
Hunter laughs, and she swears the sound melts every bit of tension from her bones.
"Your sisters aren't home for a few hours, we could rewatch the cosmic frontier series?"
Hunter doesn't need to be told twice, grabbing the remote and curling against her.
She lets her eyes slip closed and leans her head against his.
The bad people are still bad, but she is watching cosmic frontier with her son while curled up on the sofa with a blanket.
So, tonight, she doesn't care.
Notes:
I was watching a crime show with my mother and thought of this during a court scene.
Chapter 3: I want you around
Summary:
Camila has made many mistakes parenting Luz, luckily she still has the chance to be better.
Chapter Text
“Mija, I love your creativity but it’s gotten out of hand? Do you remember why you were in the principals office the last three times?”
Luz's face saddens as she slowly nods before Camila continues.
“We all love that you express yourself, but if you can’t learn to separate fantasy from reality, you may need to spend the summer here.”
And she hands her daughter a pamphlet, shrouded in a terrible darkness that swirls around them both.
“Don’t worry, Mom. I won’t let you down.”
She blinks and she’s stood in... The Owl House? How did she get here?
“Well, a deal’s a deal. Let’s get you home.”
She turns to find Luz, stood across from King and Eda.
She sees the reality check camp pamphlet in Luz’s hands and the darkness returns choking her, her vision going hazy.
Through the haze of black she can just about make out Luz’s voice.
“I want to stay and become a witch. Like you. And Azura!”
“You sure kiddo?”
Luz nods, bouncing on her heels.
“Yeah! I mean...”
She stares down at the pamphlet and frowns sadly.
“It’s not like I’d wanna go back to my mom...”
Tears stream down Camila’s face and she can’t say if it’s from the lack of air or the guilt.
“She clearly doesn’t want me around.”
I do, I do! She tries to call to Luz but when she opens her mouth, all that comes out is a strangled noise.
Luz runs and wraps her arms around Eda, and the blackness surrounding her begins to whisper.
“What kind of mother are you... that your own daughter would rather live with a stranger?”
Camila bolts upright in bed, and claws at her chest gasping desperately for air.
“Ay, dios mio, it’s just a dream.”
It’s a few minutes before she can calm herself, having to resort to the same breathing exercises she uses to calm her kids, and when she does finally start to relax a little the pain does not leave her.
She clearly doesn’t want me around...
Did Luz really think that? Don’t be stupid Camila, even if she did once, things are different now.
She never should have had to think it...
Camila tosses the covers aside and reaches for her glasses, quietly making her way downstairs.
She hopes to make herself a coffee and sit with an episode of one of her soap operas until the guilt gnawing away at her subsides, but as always, God has other plans.
“Okay, soil, plants and just a touuch of abomination matter... Gah!”
At the sound of the scream, Camila dashes into the kitchen at a speed she should not be capable of at 1 in the morning.
Luz grimaces as Camila runs in, and backs away from the purple goo spilling over the counter and onto the floor.
“We have an abomination test in the morning.”
Camila frowns at the strange substance all over her kitchen floor.
“Could you not have done this earlier.”
Luz grabs a cloth from the drawer as she speaks.
“I mean, I could’ve but...”
She shrugs and looks sheepishly at Camila.
“I didn’t. Sorry Mamá.”
She clearly doesn’t want me around...
“Maybe... Maybe I could help you? I don’t know much about this stuff but, two heads are better than one.”
Luz seems surprised for a moment, most likely that she’s not in trouble, before smiling and nodding enthusiastically.
“Yeah! That’d be great.”
Camila grins back at her daughter before glancing at the abomination matter soaked cloth.
“Why don’t I get the mop.”
“That might be for the best.”

Chapter 5: Break A Leg Vee!
Summary:
Vee witnesses a public performance in the marketplace and finds a new hobby.
Notes:
Day 4: Errands/Hobbies
Chapter Text
Camila is worried about Vee.
Since her true identity was revealed and she stopped pretending to be Luz, she had shown no personal interest in... well anything!
She was incredibly tidy, and focused all her energy on being helpful, like she was earning her keep.
Once Luz had returned, Vee had done everything she could to help with the portal and when she wasn't doing that she threw herself into the housework.
Between her and Hunter the house had never been cleaner.
But even now, with Belos gone and everyone safe and sound, she still didn't seem to have anything she liked to do for fun.
Camila tales a breath and walks through to the living room, where Vee and Luz are watching Azura.
"So, wait is Hecate good or bad?"
"She's not- Ugh! It's not that simple Vee!"
Vee shrugs and grabs another handful of popcorn from the bowl on Luz's lap.
"Luz, Vee."
Her girls look up and smile at the sight of her.
"Hey mom, what's up?"
Camila clears her throat and takes off her glasses to clean them as she speaks.
"I was wondering if either of you might like to come and run some errands?"
Vee nods and shifts into her human form as she stands, Luz shakes her head.
"No thanks, I'm meeting Amity soon."
Camila has to admit she's a little glad it will just be her and Vee, she wants to talk to the girl.
"Just me and you then Vee."
The basilisk starts skipping towards the hallway.
"Cool! I'll get my coat."
Camila and Vee wander round the busy market doing the shopping for dinner.
Though, that could've left ages ago, already having everything they need.
So, Camila's been grabbing random extras while she works herself up to talk to Vee.
"Vee... I've been meaning to talk to you about... Vee?"
Camila follows her gaze across the marketplace, to a marked off area where a few kids around her age are doing some sort of performance.
"Vee?"
"Huh?"
Vee blinks and turns back to Camila.
"Sorry."
Camila glances back over at the makeshift stage, a few people are sat at the nearby tables watching the performance.
"Do you wanna go over and watch them for a bit?"
Vee laughs awkwardly and clasps her hands in front of her.
"Whaaaat? Pffft, nooo."
"Are you sure? Because we have everything we need."
Vee bites her lip and looks anxiously at Camila.
"Um yeah... okay."
They stay and watch the performance until the end which only takes another half an hour, and Camila starts gathering their things to leave.
"Vee are you ready to..."
Camila breaks into a grin.
Vee is chatting to a few of the kids from the performance, asking them all kinds of questions.
She's more excited then Camila's ever seen her.
Camila places her bag back on the table and gets the attention of one of the nearby teachers.
"Excuse me, I want to ask about your theatre club?"
Four months later
"This is so awesome! Your first show!"
Camila chuckles as Luz rambles excitedly to Vee.
Hunter rolls his eyes and ruffles Luz's hair.
"Calm down Luz, don't make her nervous. You'll do great Vee, no pressure."
"Hunter's right Mija, and we'll be watching in the audience we wouldnt miss it for the world."
Vee nods as she readies herself to head backstage and get ready.
"Thanks guys, and thanks mom, I couldn't have done this without your help."
Camila smiles and is reminded not for the first time how grateful she is that Vee has found something she loves to do.
"Of course, Querida."
Luz quickly hugs Vee for the hundredth time.
"See you after the show okay? Break a leg!"
Hunter looks deeply alarmed and glares at Luz.
"Luz don't be mean, why would you want her to break a leg?"
Vee laughs and puts a hand on Hunter's arm.
"No Hunter, that's what people say in the theatre. It means good luck!"
Hunter nods slowly while Luz cackles at him.
"Oh, okay. Break a leg Vee!"
Camila nods, and kisses Vee on the forehead.
"Yes. Break a leg Vee."
Chapter 6: I don't understand. But I don't need to.
Summary:
Hexside is back up and running and it's the first day of school
Chapter Text
“Luz will you hurry up! We’re going to be late!”
Camila chuckles as Hunter hovers by the door, waiting impatiently for Luz to put her bag on.
Vee glances up at Camila from where she sits on the couch with her cereal.
“He was up at like 5am and he’s been like this all morning. I think Luz is going to strangle him.”
Luz rolls her eyes and heads to the door, gesturing for Hunter to move so she can get her shoes from behind him.
“Will you calm down already? We’re literally leaving early, we’re not going to be late.”
Camila grabs her bag and kisses Vee’s head as Hunter and Luz argue in the foyer.
“School bus will be here in 15 minutes, have a good day Mija.”
Vee gives her a thumbs up and gestures to her siblings
“You too Mama, and good luck with them.”
Camila heads for the door and takes the sandal Luz was threatening Hunter with from her.
“Absolutely not, let’s go.”
“I have to say, it is quite impressive that they got the school back up this quickly.”
Luz nods, beaming up at Hexside.
“I know. Magic is so awesome.”
“BOO!”
Camila, Luz and Hunter all shriek as Gus appears behind them in a cloud of illusion smoke.
“Hah, Gotcha!”
“Gus!”
“You’ve been spending too much time with the Blight twins.”
Gus snickers at Luz and Hunter’s outrage before turning his attention towards her.
“Hi Camila!”
Camila folds her arms and punctuates her words with a wink.
“Hello, Gus. That was a good trick.”
Gus grins smugly at Hunter who is still glaring at him.
“See? Camila likes my tricks.”
Hunter and Gus quickly descend into friendly bickering, just as Amity flies over sliding off her staff to take Luz’s hand.
“Hola batata.”
Luz quickly turns to throw her arms around Amity while Willow dismounts her own staff nearby.
“We were flying together, and the second she saw Luz she was gone.”
Willow rolls her eyes at the two, and as Camila laughs at the antics of the group the school bell... screams... does she even want to know?
Hunter makes an anxious squeak noise and Gus grabs his hand and starts to drag him inside.
“C’mon Hunter, well show you the ropes.”
Willow quickly hurries after them, and as Camila quickly hugs Luz goodbye, Amity sees her cue to give them a moment and wait for her girlfriend inside.
“I still don’t understand anything about this place... but I’m happy you’re happy Mija.”
Luz hugs her tighter for a second before pulling back, slightly teary.
“Gracias Mama.”
“Have a good day Mija. Oh and by the way, after school you need to tell me why Amity calls you sweet potato because you still haven’t explained that.”
Luz laughs and hugs her once more before going inside.
“I will Mama.”
