Work Text:

The mannequins are all decked out in various decadent dresses in shades of as many colours as possible. Faybelle inspects one, trying to look bored. Internally though, there’s a myriad of assessments the dress is being run through. Faybelle needs to be one hundred percent sure about it. She decides the dress is too yellowish, and moves on to one with blue fabric and a star print.

 “Miss?”.

Faybelle turns to see a meek little store assistant holding a clipboard.

 “What is it?!” Faybelle snaps.

She shrinks back a little. “I, was wondering if-”.

“How dare you insinuate I can’t pick out a dress for myself on my own? Who do you think I am?!”.

The worker scurries away quickly like a little mouse. Faybelle huffs and turns back to the dress. It really would suit her so well. Faybelle checks the price tag and decides it’s perfect. She calls over the sales assistant.

 “This one.”.

The sales assistant makes a note of it on her clipboard. She leads Faybelle to the counter, still visibly shaking a little. After Faybelle swipes her card to pay, she waits a little bit for the dress to be packaged, leaning against a wall and checking her makeup in her compact mirror.

 “Here it is.”.

Faybelle looks up to see an employee that is not, in fact, the one she scared earlier. He’s smiling far too enthusiastically for someone who works in retail.

She takes the box from his hands, and is about to leave when he pipes

“Is this a gift for someone, ma’am?”.

“Of course not! The future dark fairy does not believe in gifts. Go bother a troll or something!.”.

The man blinks, surprised by Faybelle’s behaviour. He raises his hands and walks away.

Faybelle lets out a breath, relieved that she’s asserted herself so well. It would truly ruin her reputation if people knew she was being generous.

She flies out of the store and back to Ever After High, waving to the cheerhexers and smiling wickedly when they go crazy in response. She can’t stay and chat though. She has to get to the dorms quickly.

Baba Yaga has always touted the good of self talk, and Faybelle hates to admit it, but it really does work wonders. Right now Faybelle is reminding herself that it doesn’t mean anything, giving Farrah something for her birthday is a superficial gesture, and is indicative of nothing. Back to present matters, Faybelle needs to be quick about this, or else the chances that someone will see her will go up dramatically, and she’ll need to explain herself.

Once she’s at Farrah’s dorm room, she rings the bell and taps her foot impatiently. Luckily, Farrah’s roommate is away at singing practice or something, so it’s only Farrah that comes to the door.

“Faybelle? Hi, what brings you here?”.

Faybelle pushes the box at her, and Farrah takes it.

 “What’s this?”.

Faybelle blushes as she speaks. “It’s a dress, ‘cuz, your birthday’s tomorrow.”.

 “Oh, thank you.”.

Farrah simply has to know what she’s doing, because Faybelle blushes harder, which is so embarrassing.

“This doesn’t mean we’re friends.” Faybelle blurts.

 “Oh, that’s… okay, I guess?”.

“I’m only giving you the dress because…” She trails off “I don’t need to explain myself to you!”.

Farrah looks incredibly confused. This situation has gotten out of hand very quickly, so Faybelle flies off, all flustered.

Her heart is going fast in a way that does not correlate to her flying at all, and Farrah’s dominating her thoughts, most of which we, as narrators of a mostly family friendly story, should not disclose.

Faybelle doesn’t stop until she’s at her dorm room, and she rushes inside and flops on her bed. She should never speak of this to anyone, especially not her mother, and she should also never talk to Farrah ever again.
