Chapter Text

Medic sighed, looking her figure over in the mirror. Not having curves the other ladies had didn’t bother her most days, but sometimes dysphoria got the better of her.

She grabbed the needle from the table beside her, barely feeling the prick in her thigh as she took the injection. Medic wished she could’ve been born a girl.

It would’ve saved her so much trouble, but she couldn’t help but wonder if there was a world where that dream had come true, but that Medic wanted to be a man.

She pulled the needle from her thigh, discarding it before grabbing her coat and trousers. She’d done the surgeries herself, but the way the uniform looked made her feel like it’d been for nothing. Did Mann Co. just like seeing her in a man’s uniform? Or did it make her see what she really was?

“Shut up,” she hissed, shooing the thought away.

You’re lying to yourself, her mind said. How long can you keep up this facade?

“It’s not a facade!”

There you go again, Freida. Or should we say Fritz?

“That’s not my name!” Her voice cracked, the woman in the mirror staring back. Medic staggered back, tears welling in her eyes.

Admit it. You’re a living failure.

“I’m not a failure!” she yelled back at the mirror, wiping tears away.

And they still left you behind for the camps.

Medic stopped, a brief moment of shock before she lunged, smashing the mirror. The glass shattered, cuts opening on her hand as she shook. Her breath came quickly, eyes wide as she watched the blood trickle down her fist.

“Doctor? Are you in here?” Medic looked up at Heavy, eyes glassy with held back tears. Heavy moved to the doctor’s side, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder.

“Did the woman in the mirror come back?” Heavy asked, and Medic nodded. Medic was staring off at something Heavy couldn’t see, body shaking in a way that hadn’t happened since back then.

She couldn’t say anything, and didn’t try to, instead wrapping her arms around Heavy and burying her face in the crook of Heavy’s neck.

Heavy hugged Medic back, lifting the smaller woman off the ground with ease. They’d done this before, when Medic’s mind turned on her. And Heavy, the bear of a woman she was, was proud to be a living pillow for her love.

The shaking was eventually replaced as Medic cried into Heavy’s shoulder, sobs muffled. Medic felt so small, helpless just like she had when she was a kid.

But she was no longer a girl. She was a woman, and a strong one at that.

She could survive Kristallnacht.

She could survive this.
