Work Text:

"Hey dingus your boyfriend is here!" Robin swung the door open, finding Steve sat down at the table. She rolled her eyes, walking up to him and shoving the Scoops Ahoy hat, which was discarded on the table, to his chest. "Plus, it's your turn to run the counter."

Steve groaned, fitting the hat on himself and fixing his hair as he did so. "No clue who you're on about."

"Sure, sure." His best friend smirked at him, "Just go do your job, Harrington."

He glared at her for a second, before sighing and turning around, knowing it was best not to talk back.

Especially when 𝘩𝘦 was waiting.

The ice cream place wasn't too busy, Erica and her group of friends had been here a few minutes ago. Thankfully Steve managed to miss them.

Then he spotted him. Jonathan. In his usual button up shirt and jeans, his camera slung across his chest. The same camera Steve had bought him a few years ago, probably not in the best circumstances. Steve had tried his best to make up for it though: helping clean the Byers home after the demogorgan attack; drove Will to the hospital for check ups when neither Jon or Joyce were free; brought Jonathan coffee when he was tired at work and generally just there for Jonathan when he needed it.

Steve waved in the direction of Jonathan, trying to get his attention, and the boy spotted him a few seconds after that, giving a small smile and walking up to the counter.

"Ice cream?" Steve asked, trying not to smirk at the guy.

"The usual." Jonathan responded, the corner of his lip slightly curved up as he avoided eye contact and glanced down at the ice creams. He was conscious of a few kids sitting nearby and didn't want to bring too much attention to them.

Steve rose his eyebrows as he scooped up some vanilla ice cream and littered sprinkles on it, handing it to Jon.
"You've been coming more and more often, Robin is getting suspicious." He whispered, fully aware that the girl was in the room behind him.

Jonathan gave a small smile, hiding it by looking down at the dessert. "So is Nancy. She keeps wondering who I'm going out with all the time."

"What do you say?"

"Will. Since There's not really many people I'd willingly go out with." He walked further down the counter, Steve followed him and rested his elbows against the surface, looking up at him.

"Honoured to be in the few then."

Jonathan's cheeks visibly adopted a light pink tint, spreading across his face as he buried his face in the icecream to mask it.

"You're adorable." Steve whispered, pulling himself back up the counter, looking into Jonathan's eyes as if he wanted to lean forwards and kiss him. Unfortunately, the place was a bit too public for that. Even though the group of kids at a nearby table were stuck into talking, he wouldn't risk it.

As if someone had read his mind and blessed him in that moment, Robin left the back room and announced she would be going to get herself some food for the rest of her break. She gave a small wink to Steve and gave Jonathan a long look as she walked off. Steve could imagine the smirk on her face as she left.

"See what I mean? Definitely onto us." He mumbled with a sigh.

Jonathan shrugged. "She doesn't seem like she's against it though. Maybe she's okay with it?"

Steve glanced at him for a few seconds. "Well I'm not telling her. I won't hear the end of it." His eyes then did a quick sweep of Scoops Ahoy, it wasn't going to get much busier yet. "So, no customers. We could...you know." He pointed at the back room, a mischievous look in his eyes.

"Thought you just said you wouldn't want Robin knowing." He rolled his eyes but didn't argue as he walked behind the counter and entered the room as quick as possible, hoping nobody would spot them. People who didn't work there couldn't go behind the counter, but Steve always let Dustin or the other kids in occasionally, so he was already breaking the rules.

Steve followed and the moment the door closed he almost pounced on the other guy. He pushed Jonathan against the wall, and nuzzled his neck, leaving small, soft kisses against it. Jon chuckled quietly, surprised by the gentle attack. He tangled his fingers in Steve's hair, tugging it upwards so they were face to face. Then kissed him. Slowly, passionately, their lips fitting together perfectly and their bodies slotted together as if they were made for each other.

After a few moments, Steve pulled back, taking a few deep breaths, his eyes on Jonathan's. He took his hat off and threw it on the table.
"At least warn me next time-" Jonathan laughed, his arms going around Steve's shoulders and forcing him into an embrace.

"Sorry, Johnny~" Steve purred, arms around Jonathan's waist as he continued to kiss his neck, as he did earlier. "I just haven't seen you in a while."

"Since last night. When we saw that movie at yours?" Jonathan mumbled, face buried in Steve's hair.

Steve smiled against Jonathan's neck, pressing a harder, almost bruising kiss on the skin, making the boy let out a small gasp. "That was too long ago."

"I missed you too~" Jonathan murmured as an agreement, letting Steve leave kisses on his skin, which were becoming dangerously close to hickeys. He always warned Steve not to leave them in the summer since he couldn't cover them up easily. He could ask to borrow Nancy's makeup, but then she would question him and he wouldn't be able to lie to her. So it was best avoiding them unless there wasn't a risk of anyone seeing them for a while.

They were in the mall, with plenty people around so...

"Steve! I have to take Will home later, I don't want him questioning me if I'm covered in marks." Jonathan pushed Steve back a bit, looking into the boy's gaze.

Steve rolled his eyes, cupping his boyfriend's cheeks and bringing his face in closer for a kiss on the lips this time. More desperate and faster than earlier, tugging lightly at Jonathan's bottom lip. Afterwards, he kissed Jonathan's forehead softly. "Shame...you're so pretty in that new shirt."

"You bought it for me."

"I know, and I have great style."

Jonathan smiled, looking a bit embarrassed. He hated when people spent money on him, but Steve insisted on getting it since the grey looked good on Jonathan.

They continued kissing and hugging against the wall for a bit longer, until the bell rang, signalling customers had arrived. Steve really didn't want to go, he could stay with Jonathan like this for hours, holding and kissing him. Although, he did have to keep his job so that wouldn't be the best idea.

"Wait here, duty calls." Steve gave his boyfriend one more kiss on the cheek before stepping back, grabbing his hat off the table and walking out into the ice cream store again.

"About time Steve!" Dustin greeted him, his DND gang behind him, including Will. Good thing Jonathan had stayed in the room then...because the amount of questions they would've gotten would've given them both a headache.

Steve masked his earlier flustered face with his usual look, trying not to give anything away about what he was just doing.

"Your hair is messed up." Dustin added, sharing a smirk with Lucas.

Steve's heart stopped a second, then regained composure as he fixed his hair around his hat. "You caught me off guard."

"From doing what?" Mike asked, also noticing the guilty look on Steve's face even when the older teen tried to hide it.

"Nothing."

"I thought you said you're taking a break from girls?" Dustin ignored what Steve said and kept on pressing. That kid definitely wasn't stupid.

"I am. Now you guys want ice cream or not?" Steve really wanted to get back to Jonathan since he didn't want the boy to be left alone for too long. He was going to kill Dustin if he began teasing and questioning him again.

"Is that a girl you've got in the room?" Lucas asked, doing exactly was Dustin did and ignored Steve.

"No. Not a girl." Wasn't entirely a lie. "Anyways, ice creams or leave."

"Two extra because El and Max want some." Will spoke up for the first time from beside Mike. Thank God nobody else pressed on.

Steve sighed, preparing six ice creams. It was even more work than when Erica came. Could they ever go anywhere else for food? Even worse when Robin appeared from behind the corner and into the store.

Jonathan was still there. Robin would 100% notice him. He had to make sure she didn't go in there.

"Robin, could you take over for a sec?" He asked, even though he had no idea how he would hide Jonathan. He could just pretend Steve was helping him with something. Like his camera. But then again Robin already had her suspicions. Oh well, it would keep the kids off his back. Then again, Dustin had seen his messy hair.

It seemed like no excuse would work.

"I'm still on my break, plus they're your kids." Robin replied, giving him a shrug and walked behind the counter, towards the room.

Shit.

Robin opened the door, pausing in the doorway. She didn't say anything or even turn around to Steve, just closed the door behind her. She clearly knew what was going on but didn't want to embarrass Steve as much as she usually teased him.

Or at least he thought.

"Will, you here for your brother?" Robin opened the glass window, crossing her arms and glanced over at the younger brother.

Will shook his head, looking at Mike confused. Dustin was already turning to look at Steve with a mischievous smirk.

"Just wondering." Robin slid the window so it was closed again, and a few moments later Jonathan walked out of the room. He was blushing a deep red and staring at the floor. He walked around the counter, then finally looked at Will, who stared back at him, his expression a mix of confusion and curiousity.

"I'll pick you up later..." Jonathan mumbled to his brother, then met Steve's stunned expression and then walked off, tense and still looking down at the floor.

All four kids watched the older boy leave and turned to Steve In shock, especially Will, who looked completely flabbergasted. Steve looked back at them, wanting to go into the room and strangle Robin for doing this to him. He was about to hand them the last of the ice cream and hide for eternity but then all the kids spoke in unison, surprise clear in their voices.

"JONATHAN?!"
