Work Text:

Galaxy stood there staring down at the city below him, his eyes blinking tiredly. It had been constant all day every day. He liked saving people, helping others but it was also a pain to take care of himself. Boomie wanted to harass him every step of the way, following him on missions. Galaxy wouldn’t admit it to the others' faces but he liked the company. Some other presence there to keep him from lashing out. His eyes moved to the side where he saw familiar pink hair coming his way, a book in his hand. Galaxy couldn’t stop the sigh, another mission.

“Another mission for us.” Boomie said, and for what it was worth he looked tired too. Since Mugm had left for the week mission, Blob had been given them missions back to back. Mugm had told the duo that depending on the mission they were given at least two days in between missions.

“We just killed a whole group of the restrictors.” Galaxy mumbled, his voice tired. His hand rubbed his chest, the broken eye of revival rested there. He thought about telling Boomie, Mugm even said it would build trust but he didn’t want the other to think he was a baby.

“Yeah well apparently we have to go kill a whole group of them again. They’ve been trying to get into one of our storage places.” Boomie said, his eyes flashing with annoyance. Galaxy’s eyes moved to the others mace a small smile forming.

“Maybe we just mace ourselves. Get a break that way.” Galaxy mumbled under his breath. It was sarcastic but Boomie laughed slightly.

“Yeah. Yeah if you weren’t on one life I would second that.” Boomie said, handing the book to Galaxy.

Galaxy glared at the words, he didn’t want to go all of the way to fight more people. He could practically feel the burning in his chest, the feeling of pressure in his chest had been getting worse after every fight.

“You alright?” Boomie asked, raising a brow

“I’m fine. Ready for Mugm to be back and to get a break from all of this.”

The two left making their way through the woods and down to the storage system, the pair remained silent and the pain in Galaxy’s chest continued to grow. He didn’t know why because it should have been away since his injuries were healed. Maybe it was the fever he could feel ticking into his system.

The two splashed invis quietly, a certain flow they had reached over the past week or so about how to deal with the restrictors. Galaxy made a noise of pain, rubbing his chest. It didn’t make any sense, his wounds were healed so the eye shouldn’t be hurting.

“You alright, you don’t sound good..” Boomie said, looking back at Galaxy. “You tired?”

Galaxy breathed shakily, a smile forming, “Yeah I just need sleep.”

That’s what it was, it didn’t make any other sense as to why it was hurting so bad. He could tell Boomie didn’t believe him, which was fair but he hoped the other wouldn’t bring it up again.

When they rounded the corner only a set of four restrictors stood there all clearly nervous about being there. Galaxy had nothing to say to Boomie about the plan, they had gained a sort of rhythm over the week so they didn’t need to talk about any plan.

Galaxy pulled his mace from his holster and Boomie grabbed his spear and the duo charged in. The four restrictors immediately began to move to intercept the duo and Galaxy split off, taking two of them.

Galaxy dodged a sword and windcharged up, landing a mace hit and snarling when the other off handed a totem. Galaxy landed turning off to the side and switched his mace for his axe, watching the mace vanish and swung his axe at the person.

The two restrictors seemed to be unsure of what they were doing, it was clear that they were scared and wanted to run.

“Galaxy! Hurry this up!” Boomie's voice called and the demon could hear the slight edge of tiredness in Boomie's voice.

Galaxy let out a noise of surprise turning back to his targets as one sliced part of his hair. He threw up his shield in time to block the axe and made quick work of a counter strike. He charged up and quickly switched to his gleaming mace making one of the two drop dead.

Galaxy turned over and couldn’t help the scream of pain that left him. The other had lodged a sword through his side and his chest tightened. He made a noise of frustration and pulled the sword out. His eyes watered and he could hear Boomie's concerned voice in his ears but he ignored it.

Galaxy moved, slicing the remaining guard with his axe. Watching the guy stumble and Galaxy blinked surprised as the other guard held a mace of his own.

“Boomie!” Galaxy cried out, fumbling with a totem and crying out as his totem popped feeling blood trail down his head. He felt his chest tighten again, the thrum of the broken eye making his body lock up.

He thought it was over, that not even a year into vanguard he was dying until the sound of the guards own pained shout as Boomie appeared, spear macing the other.

Galaxy’s eyes moved around the room, all four guards were taken care of and his eyes moved to Boomie. Who.. somehow was right in front of him now.

“Galaxy, hey hey look at me.” Boomie snapped, pulling out a healing potion and regen potion.

Galaxy’s eyes fluttered as he felt the haze of sleep deprivation fill him, he could take a nice nap right now. He was just.. so tired.

“Galaxy! Eyes open you idiot.” Boomie snapped, concern leaking into his voice as he uncorked a health potion.

“‘m sorry.” Galaxy mumbled, his eyes fluttering again.

He would’ve slept, he would’ve shut his eyes right then and there if Boomie hadn’t made a noise of suprise. Galaxy’s eyes opened slightly and a figure stood their, he looked angry. Galaxy hoped Boomie would be able to protect himself.

Galaxy shut his eyes but right before he could fully fade out he heard the figure speak.

“What the fuck happened here.”

_________

When Galaxy awoke again he was draped across somebody, his back against a bed and his head resting on someone’s lap as hands moved carefully through his clean hair. Which was surprising, last he checked blood had been caked in his hair and his body was knocked out cold hundreds of blocks away in a storage building.

Galaxy turned his head and he couldn’t stop the pained noise that left his mouth. His head hurt like hell and his chest burned as the familiar broken eye thrummed in rhythm with his heart. The hands in his hair paused slightly seemingly taking notice of the now awake hybrid.

“Hi.” Boomies voice, he still sounded tired but he sounded far more alert. That made Galaxy relax even more as he carefully tilted his head up. The pressure had him wincing.

“Boomie..?” Galaxy’s voice cracked from sleep, and he blinked surprised. How long had he been out for?

“That’s me. Morning sleeping beauty.” Boomie said, shifting his legs and looking down at him.

“How long did I sleep..?” Galaxy stretched out slightly, rubbing his chest.

“Mugm told me I was out for a few days, so you were out for a little over a week.” Boomie said, his voice softened slightly.

Galaxy hummed before mulling over the words again. "Mugms back?”

Boomie nodded. “He wasn’t happy that they were sending us on so many missions so he started an uproar. Blob is lucky Mugm didn’t kill him.”

Galaxy nodded, turning over and stretching again, his eyes fluttering again. He brought his hand to his chest and breathed slowly.

“You can’t fall asleep again just yet. MugM wants to talk with us. Well, more so you.” Boomie said, carefully drawing shapes on the demon hybrids forehead.

Galaxy let out a noise of complaint but stayed awake. The two sat in comfortable silence listening to the air conditioning hum and quietly thinking. The duo looked at the door at the same time as the door swung open and Mugm stood there.

“Galaxy?” Mugm’s voice tried to remain neutral but there was relief in his voice.

“Hi MugM..” Galaxy said, a small tired smile on his face.

Boomie looked somewhat jealous but he let out a surprised noise when Mugm kneeled beside the two of them. Looking relieved.

“Next time. Next time this happens IF it happens. You message me immediately. No if or but or what ifs. Am I clear?” Mugm sounded angry, but for Galaxy he smiled slightly because it wasn’t anger at him. Mugm cared about him, cared about Boomie too by the look the void being gave the pink haired demon.

Boomie nodded, a distant look in his eyes.

“Okay. Clear as day.” Galaxy said, nudging Boomie.

Mugm sighed rubbing his face.

“Last thing, before I go and let you two rest, Galaxy the broken eye of revival. Where is it?”

Boomie stiffened and Galaxy felt the world stop. He had told Boomie had.. had he told Mugm?

“Don’t lie to me either.”

Galaxy shifted. “It’s in me.”

Mugm sighed, a frustrated noise. “You didn’t think to tell me? I had to hear it from Boomie because I couldn’t figure out why your heartbeat was so fast. I couldn’t treat you right Galaxy. What of Boomie wasn’t here?”

Before Galaxy could speak, Boomie spoke up. His voice was low and tired.

“You know Galaxy. He doesn’t care what happens to himself. This conversation needs to happen but not right now. Galaxy did just wake up after being out for days on end after all.”

Mugm blinked, taken a back but understanding crossed his gaze and he sighed.

“Honesty. That’s all I need from you Galaxy.” MugM said, Galaxy couldn’t help the guilt that filled him. For as much as MugM tried to remain neutral he looked so concerned for Galaxy.

“Rest you two. I’ll be back later if you both are awake with food.” Mugm stood, moving and leaving the room. Galaxy and Boomie could both see the way Mugm’s shoulders dropped with relief. The way the tension had faded away.

Boomie sat silent, his fingers beginning to move through Galaxy’s hair again calm and slow.

“Thank you. For telling him. I’m sorry I made you worry.” Galaxy spoke, his voice low and apologetic.

Boomie sighed leaning back and adjusting to a better position.

“Stormz used to tell me that secrets you think are safe to keep affect every single person around you a certain way. You told me about the eye and. I had to stand there watching Mugm panic because he couldn’t figure out what was wrong.”

Galaxy winced at that.

“I’m not saying that to make you feel guilty I’m saying that because you need to understand how important that is to other people. We are a family Galaxy. Things that impact our health shouldn’t remain a secret.” Boomie spoke, his voice low and clear.

Galaxy nodded, curling up into Boomie. “I’m sorry.”

Boomie sighed. “Yeah you’ll be even more sorry when Mugm talks to you tomorrow.”

Galaxy winced at that and Boomie smiled.

“How cooked am I?” Galaxy joked

“Let’s just say you’ll be glad you have one life.” Boomie smiled

The two laughed softly, both tired, both hurt, but both happy beside each other. Galaxy shifted closer to Boomie and Boomie ran his fingers through Galaxy’s hair.

The duo fell asleep, both calm and relaxed getting well deserved sleep after the past few weeks. Mugm had entered later on but didn’t wake them. Simply watching them with a small smile on his face.

“Idiots. My idiots though.” Mugm said, looking away from them and shaking his head.

Vanguard is a family, and Galaxy was starting to accept that. After all, Boomie cared and Mugm cared. He wouldn’t have it any other way.
