Comment on the devil's daughter

  1. And I had other plans for Chuck later down the road that I scrapped. You can only have so many villains in a story, which is one show’s biggest pitfalls. Pick a few and stick with them, guys.

Jughead has a bunch of ulterior motives for conning Betty into spending time together. There is a lot more going on with the Jason Blossom murder here, and I know it takes me a very, very, very long time to get to the climax. I – urgh, I don’t want to give too much away.

But, that is the running theme throughout this story, which you hit the nail on the head. When you have the sort of background that Jughead and Betty have here, it’s difficult to have any self-awareness of your emotions and feelings about really anything, whether they are correct or valid. Sometimes objectively they seem terrible and make you a bad person even if they make you feel good. Sometimes objectively they are wholesome and healthy, but you’ve been conditioned to think most of your self, your wants and needs and actions, are incorrect and wrong, so it gets flipped upside down. There’s almost no winning. And that’s why it takes ages for them to get together here; it almost seems like they shouldn’t be able to, but there’s this inevitable pull. Sometimes that inevitable pull leads you to someone who is actually awful for you. Sometimes it leads you to someone who ends up being good for you. Let’s hope it’s the latter for these two. Sorry, that was a ramble.

This chapter was supposed to be the first glimpse that Betty might not mind Jug’s stalking, but no one really knows why until we get through the entire story up to chapter 11/12. I’ve never drawn something out over such a long period in my life, and I applaud you for sticking with it. Sometimes it feels unbelievably tedious to me, but I hope it is worth it in the end!

I really appreciate you taking the time to drop a comment as you go along. Please don’t feel like you need to, though!

The first time around, I didn't find this fic until I think 10 or so chapters were up, so I ended up leaving just one or two comments. I figured with it being reposted, it was a chance to both reread so I'd have a fresh memory before I read the update, but actually comment on each chapter. Tedious is the last word I'd use to describe this fic, honestly. It's one of my favorites in all of fandom, and I figure as long as author's like getting feedback the least I can do is take a few minutes to share my thoughts on something that takes so much time, effort and creativity.
