Her voice was growing hoarse, and he could see the tears beginning to prickle in the corner of her infinite, now slightly bloodshot eyes. He stared at her firmly as she brought her free hand up to cup his other cheek. His hands twitched by his sides as his brain screamed at him to reach out and hold her, just as she was holding him. He wanted to wrap his huge, powerful arms around her and protect her from all the awful things in the world—including himself.

All Tora could focus on was the thick air between the two of them and the way her lips were moving, as if she were trying to form her thoughts into words, but her body refused. Tora knew he wouldn’t have been able to do a much better job at speaking as it was times like this that reminded him exactly what Poppy did to him, and exactly how he felt about Poppy.

She watched as he slowly stepped inside, tugging his baseball cap off and tossing it onto the tiny table beside the door while also stepping out of his boots. Had he always been this tall?
